It's just so chilling. This dude just grabbed a chunk of graphite and was like "What's this?" and now his hands are melting away in the next scene.

Now they are ordering some guy up to the roof to look off into the plume of radioactive smoke. All because they are sure it's not a reactor problem. Just chilling.

I dont understand why they didnt just launch the radioactive material into space and let the martians take care of it. That's how we should get rid of all radioactive waste to be honest.

Yeah, this episode is great. Chilling is definitely the word.

All of them screwed, some just faster than others. Geiger counter maxing out at 3.5 and some of them just assuming that was right lol.

Can't wait for the next episode.

I didn't know any details about the disaster nor am I familiar with how radioactive energy works but that entire first episode was so scary to me. I'm guessing everyone in that town dies? Why does Wikipedia say only 14 deaths?

The neighboring town was evacuated, some people remained. 14 people probably died as an immediate consequence of the accident but obviously far more people suffered from the radiological effects. They even set up entire medical programs in Ukraine afterwards - people born in the various exclusionary zones were granted certain medical privileges and are tracked to see if they feature any of the symptoms or signs of radiation poisoning.

I don't know about this miniseries, is it a documentary or a dramatization?

Execute everyone involved still alive. That is ridiculous and unacceptable and should have been grounds for an immediate revolution. The government cannot be allowed to conduct these kinds of experiments on civilians.

for the most part only extremely high doses of radiation kills so the people who were actually on the site of the explosion (close to the reactor, like the firefighters and reactor technicians) got enough rads to die. most others who were much farther away only got "minor" doses that could be easily treated if they got help. unfortunately the sheer incompetence of the clean up effort and just figuring out what was going on also got people needlessly killed (im sure we'll see this on the next few episodes). the whole thing was a clusterfuck of epic proportions. a lot of people also ended up getting future health problems and birth defects. depending on the study you want to believe, some think as many as 3600 people died from future health complications and suicides as a result of its events.

I was so frustrated with the head of the plant, or whoever he was, the guy that just wouldn't take anyone's word for it and kept insisting that, no, the core did not explode, just flush it all with water and we'll be fine.

And then in the meeting, gramps getting up and saying "we should trust in socialism, it will lead the way and reward us... so go ahead and cut all the telephone wires so no one can send out misinformation".

Just got back from my buddies house where we watched the first episode... really glad I did. When he was like "dude check this show out" I was like "ugh... I don't want to watch TV dude lets do something" but now I'm glad I did.

Sounds interesting.

But if you want a real honest to god horror story about radiation exposure. Google Hisashi Ouchi.
Just be prepared as there are pictures and it is nightmare fuel.
