lol, ya, that's why a non tipping country like Japan has far better service than US. American service is just shit in general and not worth tipping.

New video on the tipping culture in the US. Glad to see this issue getting more mainstream coverage, maybe tipping culture will actually change in the near future, especially with more and more immigrants coming to the US from foreign countries where they are already used to good service without tipping.

Standard tip of 10% unless you do something to standout. I'm not giving more just because they decided to try and push the standard higher. The suggested tip calculatoron the receipt doesn't even show 10% anymore, in a lot of places. It won't be long before they're trying to insist that 20% is the minimum we should be giving. Screw that nonsense. I'll just stop tipping altogether if they try to go that far with it.

Two people (thought it was more at first read through) mentioned tipping 0% for bad service specifically. I was just wondering where they were because the only time I would have ever considered tipping 0%, we walked out before ordering food. Just curious as to the stories I guess.

@kangolcone

Here's one example in which we tipped $0 or $.02 as a statement to the servers service (or rather lack thereof).

It was like 5-6 a.m. and my family and I had just gotten out of the E.R. after 5-6 or more hours. So we figured why not grab breakfast before going home to get some sleep. We go to a fast casual chain (Denny's) and it's pretty much literally us, the ONE waitress and maybe ONE cook in the whole place at that hour.

So she comes over, gets our drink order and then disappears. Ten or so minutes later she finally brings us our coffees and takes our food order. Twenty to thirty minutes later she finally brings us the food, which by this point is lukewarm. Then she disappears AGAIN. Another 20-30 minutes later she comes back, plops the check down without asking if we needed or wanted a refill on coffee or if everything was OK (would've given her an earful on that front) and then leaves AGAIN.

In between her Houdini like appearances to plop down our drinks and barely warm food she was outside with her cell phone snapping pictures of the sunrise and/or smoking. THAT is where she disappeared to EVERY time.

We gave her $.02 for a tip.

Me I went to a place once and got buffet but the waitresses still served and refilled our drinks. All she did was bring us our drinks and never came back. Place wasnt even busy so there really wasnt any excuse I could see gor it. I really wanted a refill too, I came very close to just going back to the waitress station and filling it myself but by the time it came to that the person I was with was ready to leave.

15%, just because wait staff are the worst whiners in the history of whining. I shouldn't have to tip at all because they get basically minimum as is and have the option of working elsewhere if they want. They don't, because the tips they do get make their income completely disproportionate to the amount of "work" they actually do. And they won't claim it if it's cash. Five vacations overseas every year and an expensive truck or a car wouldn't be possible if that weren't true.

This is all personal knowledge and if you're going to say "I claim mine.", congratulations, you're the one server with monetary morals.

I tipped a girl a quarter one time and she threw it at me, but I guarantee even after she tipped out BoH she went positive on that free, gifted money. Like I said, worst whiners in the history of whining.

20% or more, but I have worked as a server

If the service is not great I go down to 15

It's not a fun job

I had fun while doing it. Got to see some crazy shit. I was pulling in $200-300 a week in tips, plus less than minimum wage Was working $6 - $8 (depending on the year) an hour for 16 hours a week. So $500 gross plus tips. Kitchen staff were making $2 more an hour and worked more hours.

But yeah. I usually do 15-20%

Bad service or buffet is 10%. I think I've only ever left a 0 tip once.

Delivery drivers always get 20% (sometimes more if it's bad weather). They only get paid a small amount per delivery: the delivery charge. They have gas to pay for, and deal with the worst kinds of people.

I never tip counter service. Ever. I'm even insulted if there's a tip jar, or the POS machine asks if I want to leave one. I mean, aside from cooking, I'm doing all the work and usually standing around waiting for the food to be cooked.

Also: fuck places that automatically add a gratuity to the bill. Like fuck off. This pisses me off so much.

Oh, and I will tip the person who does my hair cut if s/he just fucking cuts my hair well, and doesn't talk to me.

Usually 15%. 20% if you do excellent service. 10% or below if you do less than ok, and 0% if you were a jerk to me and gave me this dumb look that clearly accuses me of being cheap when I said I want water.

I'm calling you out, Matthew from Applebee's.
