What was your GOTY for 2018?

It was a tough year, without question. There is basically a Big 6 (IMO) that you can't really argue the technical merits of. God of War, Spider-Man, Red Dead Redemption 2, Smash Bros Ultimate, Celeste, and Monster Hunter World.

If I'm just picking the game I played the most, Monster Hunter World would be it. Awesome creature design, fun fights, the grind is not nearly as bad as in previous games, and playing it on a powerful system for the first time was awesome. But, also, a lot of that fun is based off other people playing it with me. Once my friends were not available, my fun factor went down.

Same goes with Smash Bros.

So then we go to God of War, Spider-Man, RDR 2, and Celeste.

Spider-Man is fun, but nothing about it again was innovative. It was exactly what I wanted, which isn't a bad thing, but it doesn't make it GOTY. Not with the others.

So then you had 3. God of War was magnificent, telling a personal story about the last character I'd have ever thought I'd care to hear a "personal story" about. Humanizing Kratos from basically being a rage monster hell bent on destroying the gods to what happened in GOW 4 was impressive. Damned impressive.

Red Dead 2 being almost as much a simulator as it was a "Rockstar" game is somewhat unexpected. I wasn't expecting a more core Wild West sim from the likes of "SHARK CARDS!!!" Rockstar. It was appreciated despite the odd controls at times.

Celeste is a very good platformer with an affecting storyline that hit me harder than I was expecting. It's unexpected that in a genre that is mostly dominated by "Get to the end of the level because that's how the game works/rescue the person in distress/get the macguffin" is an amazing story about the effects of depression and anxiety on a person, and learning to accept those issues with yourself.

I think my GOTY is Red Dead 2, overall.

Monster Hunter World gave me like 350 hours of enjoyment.

Spider-man was a huge let down for me. It was super fun but there just wasn't enough.

Conan Exiles tbh

It doesn't run that well on consoles, but I spent more time on it that any other game this year by far.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance.

Even at its buggiest (at launch) it was still an incredible experience. Can't speak on the DLCs they've released since then (I'm waiting until they release it all before I pick them up and do another full run), but the base game was amazing.

Out of all the games that I played this year, that were actually released this year...

Did I even play a game released this year?

*checks*

Oh, yeah. I did. I completely forgot that DQXI and FFXII: TZA were this year. Fuck, this year was so long. God damn.

Anyways, out of all the ones I played, DQXI wins.

The Crash Bandicoot trilogy rerelease.

So much fun. Tons and tons of content, and very challenging. The graphics look really good. I expect I have at least 50 hours on it, if not a lot more.

MHW definitely wasnt a grind fest. It can be if you care about min/maxing but I just did the quests I thought would be fun.

Plus the best parts of spider-man still weren't that amazing. Fun, but not like goty amazing.

Probably first would be Monster Hunter World. I put in over 100 hours before I got tired of it, and had some great moments playing it with friends.

Second...I guess would be God of War, even though I never finished it. The early parts were very fun and well designed, I think it would have been better as a linear game. Once I had to boat to everything, I lost interest.

Third, maybe Assassin Creed: Odyssey. I had fun with that for awhile. Or DQXI, I can't decide which I'd place here.

I think this year has started to make me realize I don't have the patience for open world games anymore, and pretty much every big game was open world (or semi-open world) this year. I think I put more time into shitty mobile games this year just because I'm always doing something in them instead of spending 20 minutes getting from point A to point B.

I'm looking forward to next year, though, especially RE 2 and MK11.
