I saw Dave Chappelle and John Mayer last night. Chappelle did a school shooting joke and it landed. I guess it's all in the way its delivered.

And whoever has the social capital, I guess.

Like remember when you were an awkward kid and hanging out with kids in high school, and you made a joke and no one laughed, and then the super cool guy literally repeats what you said and everyone laughs like its the funniest thing they ever heard?

Pretty sure most people can relate to that at some point in their life.

Guess that's true too. I read what CK said though and it really didnt seem too funny. I'll watch the video when I'm off though. Also, I feel like Chappelle can make a joke on any topic hilarious so I guess it's a little unfair to compare.

I could pull out of a hat so many instances of comedians saying much, much worse things. Anthony Jeselnik mocks school schootings every time there is one. Frankie Boyle makes necrophilia jokes about celebrities that died of cancer. Both of these guys are popular and doing well.

I'm critical of what Louis CK did but I think it's really fucking low for people to point to jokes like this as if to say "see, he's just the worst didn't I tell you".

Its all in the tone of things though. Jeselnik says horrible things but his persona is the punchline

Like, to use an example from Louis own oeuvre, his old bit about the f-word where the punchline is quit being a [f-word] and suck that dick is an entirely different kind of comedy than a joke where the punchline is simply him calling his doctor a fat [f-word]

And his bit about calling people r*****s is hacky shit I heard at the worst open mic night Ive ever been to

I think he's definitely getting excessive residual hate due to his prior actions. But the joke from what I've read just didnt seem funny. People like Jeselnik and Tosh land offensive jokes. This just seemed like an old man yelling at his TV. It doesn't even read like a joke. That being said, it shouldn't be used against him in terms of his character, but maybe he just isnt funny anymore.

Tbh I think Louis is still going for the "I'm a bit of a dick but I have a point don't I?" asshole angle, it's just that people don't want asshole Louis CK now.

In another comedian's hands (or more accurately, in the hands of a a pre sex assault scandal Louis CK) I'think the schoolshooter bit would be more well-received. Franky Boyle's bit about Jade Goody (minor celebrity cancer victim) was about the same: we shouldn't pay attention to things people say just because they were famously tragic.

He's practicing bits which he'll use to pander to a wide audience. So, some of it will be cheap youth bashing in a club full of washouts. He can be very funny, but he's been in the business 30+ years and knows his audience.

So I am pretty sure everyone in that audience bought a ticket to Governor's Comedy club specifically to see that set. Which means that audience is probably already feeling pretty charitable towards Louis and you're unlikely to have much pushback there.

Also, not his best work. He knows his audience here and plays it very safe and very light on the commentary. I'm sure he'll come back to himself as he gets more and more into the swing of things, but he's not going to win back the people who cancelled him with this material.
