Most sensible liberals don't believe in a true open border, but the current immigration process is bloated, biased, and leaves much to be desired. The key example are dream act students. Despite the crimes of the parents, the adolescents who came along have spent more of their formative years in this country and received a public education here. They were too young to remember their "home country" and culturally they are American. To allow them the resources to attend higher education and obtain skilled jobs means that child can be a tax-paying member of society rather than continuing to live on the fringe and not "paying back." This doesn't just have to be given to them. There could be requirements like those entering the medical field to provide a commitment to practicing in underserved areas.
