I've got a terabyte HDD but I'm getting a little low on space. Would it be easy to transfer everything over to a bigger drive? It's been a long time since I've messed with harddrives. Game files are just getting so fucking big... I feel like I can have maybe ten, fifteen games installed even on a terabyte these days.

I've also got a 250gb SSD that's running my Windows and a couple games.

The installation is easy. Basically just turn off the PC, plug it in and turn it back on.

You have two options, though.

1. Reinstall Windows on the new drive. This is probably the least-complicated but will take the longest amount of time since you'll need to move everything over from the old drive manually, run updates, install your apps again, etc.

2. Clone the old drive to the new one. You'll need a boot disc of some sort to do this. I like Partition Wizard for the actual cloning process. It's free and very straightforward. You may have issues with the boot sector after cloning, though, which can be a pain to correct. There's also the matter of the drive configuration (GPT, MBR, etc). Can get pretty confusing.

Why not use both?

Yeah, come to think of it I'll probably just use that.

No reason I couldn't use three harddrives, right? Anything that would typically limit you to two?

Ok forget my last post. I missed the part about the SSD. You should definitely keep Windows on the SSD.

Just plug the new drive in and you'll get a prompt to format it if it's not already. That's pretty much it. There are no issues with running tons of HDDs at once unless you have a really weak power supply, but most likely you can use up all the SATA slots on your motherboard no problem.

noice

OK, thanks. I'm gonna go pick up a 4TB or something massive so I don't have to sweat it for years.

Anything to worry about in terms of branding? I typically trust Western Digital but I dunno if there's anything in particular to keep an eye out for.

Just stay away from the "green" drives.

Just buy the 4TB drive and plug it in. Thats it. If Windows doesnt assign it a drive letter then you can do it manually. It takes about 30 seconds. No need to mess with your other hard drives. Im running three myself.

Green as in the color?

https://www.microcenter.com/product/476881/barracuda-4tb-5900rpm-sata-iii-6gb-s-35-internal-hard-drive

Hows this Seagate?

Some people complain about 5900 being slow. But for 4TB, it may be prohibitively expensive to go up to 7200. Itll probably be fine.

Found a Toshiba with solid enough reviews at 4TB, 7200 for just $20 more. Thanks for the tip!

WD is my go-to but the same product from them was twice the cost. Not today, Micro Center.
