Back in college a group of friends called me by a different name for years because one guy forgot my name and thought it was funny. We all laughed and then didnt give a shit.

And that's understandable. That's when you calmly get on the line with management / higher ups and lodge a complaint. You don't knock over store displays in a childish fit of rage.

No I wouldn't, but I still think misgendering is wrong. If someone is dressed like a woman and wants to be called ma'am, just do it. What do you have to gain by not? You can't flip out like that when you have a poor retail experience, but that doesn't change the quality of your experience.

All the comments I've seen about this seem to be people who absolutely refuse to recognize trans people or are scared that they'll come across some NFL lineman looking fucker who wants to be called ma'am despite not presenting as a woman. These are the people that were worried letting trans people pick their bathroom would result in a bunch of creepy men announcing they are female, walking in, and sexually harassing people without repercussion.
