I'm planning to play through Night in the Woods, and I'll write about some of my thoughts as I go along in this topic, if anyone's interested. First, though, should I play Longest Night and/or Lost Constellation prior to starting NitW proper?

Fuck. Yes. Tag tag tag.

I don't know that Longest Night or Lost Constellation are necessary to play first, but they were how I was introduced to their world and I fell in love with their dialogue which NitW continued to deliver. Your call, and I would recommend trying them at some point either way.

Lost Constellation is pretty boring but Longest Night is a cute little side story. It doesn't really have anything to do with the main game at all, but it is a sample of the kind of things you can expect. I'd recommend it at least!

I'll start with Longest Night, then, and move on to Lost Constellation after NitW, if I enjoy it.

Longest Night complete! That was interesting. Now onto NitW itself.

This, as with future updates, will be written in first person, as if I'm Mae the character. Every few posts, though, I'll try to summarize my thoughts on the game so far.

So I snuck over some electrical wiring to get across a barrier, fell, and got arrested by my aunt the mall cop? Well then, apparently that's a thing I nonchalantly say to my dad.

The next day, after some sleep, I decide not to get in some bass practice, then reconnect with my mom, who suggests I head in town to reconnect with Gregg. I stop a good few times along the way for some conversation with townsfolk, one of whom still refers to me as the killer for something I apparently did back in middle school? Another alludes to a break they're taking now that it's 5, and combined with the sky's orangish tint, either I overslept or I spent too long talking to people. Then I finally reached the Snack Falcon and exchanged barbed insults in the way of old friends reconnecting. Promptly, the freewheeling Gregg declares his shift to be done, and invites me for impromptu band practice, to begin now. In my notebook on my way, I write: "GREGG RULZ OK" with a drawing of him holding a knife.

Going to do spoilers from here because I forgot to give such a disclaimer in my topic title and/or intro.

I utterly failed at bass, but what did Angus, Bea, and Gregg for that matter expect? It's been years since I played it before. Afterwards was dinner, and even bad pizza is still good by virtue of being pizza. Then, our group found a severed arm upon leaving the diner! I couldn't resist the urge to poke at it with a stick for a bit, before my aunt the mall cop showed up and told us all to go home in pairs. Riding home with Bea was awkward, but not as awkward as mom and dad not having been around to greet me and pick me up from the bus stop last night.

I didn't wake up until 4 PM the next day, and then I felt the need to browse my laptop after being away from the internet for 36 hours. But lo and behold, I found that my laptop had some rather embarrassing problems, and I would need to talk with Angus to get them fixed. On the way, I conversed with an individual who supposedly met me the day after I was born, and had some intriguing-sounding things to say about my grandpa - things that I didn't have the time to listen to! Angus left his shift early, so I had to head to his apartment and wound up electrocuting myself to meet him! Oh Gregg... Naturally I couldn't tell Angus exactly what issue my laptop was having, but he was nice enough to give me a flash drive that could fix it, at the minor cost of potentially losing some of my data.

(Out of Character) Update: I got to level 6 of the game on Mae's laptop (I forget what it's called) before growing too frustrated and calling it quits.

Yeah, I would say that sums up my feelings about it. Kinda frustrating and repetitive, but also kinda addicting, and with some surprisingly ingenious game design features.

It's time for more Maeposting!

Angus's fix worked like a charm! Once I finally got on my laptop, I found out that Gregg, Angus, and Bea were heading to a party tomorrow night at the state forest, and I'm not missing that! But first, there's this sweet new game called Demontower that's calling my name, which I played deep into the night.

Upon waking the next afternoon, I decided to embrace my inner daredevil by climbing a tree to cross part of Possum Springs balancing atop power lines. Afterwards, on my way to meet Bea at The Pickaxe to arrange my ride to the party, I encountered a Navy recruiter, which I guess entails boats? But I have plenty enough direction in my life between my friends, video games, and maybe bass playing. Fortunately, Bea was willing to give me a ride to the party once I met her, but she also told me that Conor was probably going to be there. I don't like that one bit - me and him were once "a thing" in others' terms before we broke up on poor terms.

On my way back home to prepare, I was accosted by my aunt the mall cop, who went on about how I wasn't supposed to see that severed arm, how dangerous Possum Springs apparently is, and my supposed naivete. I think she has it out for me, a thought which I make sure to write down. ACAB after all. After that harrowing experience, I couldn't resist having some of mom and dad's homemade tacos. Then I needed to get ready for the party quickly so I wouldn't miss Bea's arrival at 8:30 PM sharp. I tried to say a few things to reassure myself, which culminated in my determination that I would make my own luck, in a luck machine.

Now I'm at the party and oh god this is so awkward Conor is really here. But Gregg said it best, as usual: I might as well ruin my own night by talking to Conor rather than letting his presence ruin it for me.
