In this post: People aren't allowed to listen to things that are vastly outside their world's experience, so they have no contact outside of anything other than that what they've already known.

Not saying anything about not being allowed, I'm talking about me. I'm a dude from rural America who moved to a big city and has never spent a day in the hood, and the idea of me rapping along to some gangsta shit is ridiculous.

If you're white and do this, you're a racist. If you're literally any other color, and you're saying it to a white person. It's perfectly normal.

I love the people that get upset because they're afraid of saying the n- word in public due to the social ramifications.

Like, it's super funny. Just say the word, if you want to. Stop being a little beezy about it. It's the context of the word that matters (like many insults).

I will say that when the teacher used to read books with the n-word in it, and she said it aloud, that was pretty uncomfortable. Not because of her saying the word, but because of all the little white kids staring at me, expecting some kind of reaction.

I remember this one time in Seattle there was this white guy who may have been homeless or on drugs or something. He was calling me the n- word many times and got a little bit too close to me (like within a foot or two) and was trying to block my walking path.

I didn't really react at all. I wasn't even mad. It was just an odd experience.

Kinda like what Mead alluded to. You can't give that word any power.

My opinion on the word is kind of uncommon; I believe that a word only has as much power as people decide that it does. I don't want that word to have so much power, so I don't give it any; I use it to describe any person, male or female.

That's only in my head though; I don't go around saying it because I know some people actually are offended by it and that's fine.

I think what happened is people tried to empower the word, since it was depowering. But when a white person uses it de-emphasizes their empowering.
