Check that they tightened the oil filter. Jiffy Lube didn't on one of my cars, lost all the oil in 100 miles. Also check that they remembered to put oil in after they drained the old oil out, they've been known to forget.

It's a good idea to change your own oil. It's easy, and you know the quality of the oil because you chose it yourself. And you know it's done right, no crossthreading the filter or stripping the threads of the drain plug. Take the old oil back to the auto parts store for recycling.

As simple as an oil change is, I feel too fast is not always a good thing. As others have mentioned already, I've heard of cases of mechanics forgetting to put in new oil. My mentor lost all the oil in his pan and didn't find out until the engine started smoking because the the drain plug came loose. By luck this didn't happen during a 100+ miles drive home from a camping trip.

Fortunately I assume this have never happened to you despite their speedy service but overall I just feel when rushed to get such jobs done, mistakes are more likely to occur.

To be fair, since this place is dedicated solely to just fluid changes, as opposed to full-blown mechanical work, they actually say out to the other guy what theyre doing while theyre doing it. Which, makes me less concerned about them fucking up. Thats just me though.

Depends on the place I'd say. It is a quick and easy process but if they're backed up with other vehicles needing quick and easy maintenance, you're in for a wait.

When I was going to a Subaru dealership for some free oil changes, they just told me to park in the express lane for simple stuff like oil changes. The wait time simply varied by our busy they are at the time.

This is a little more of an aggressive stance to take, but really I agree with this. After a certain point Id rather just pay someone to do it.

I don't think it's always about saving money though. Some folks simply baby their cars and feel it is better to do something yourself, assuming you have the tools and experience. My dad didn't like taking in our car to the shop because he feels they don't let the used oil drain completely before screwing the drain plug back on and putting in new oil.

If said shop is reputable. Forgot where my friend took his dad's van to but the mechanic didn't align the drain plug correctly and stripped it and the oil pan when tightening the bolt. What shoulda been a $20-40ish oil change turned into $400+ because they had to change the oil pan too.

I would take my car in for an oil change if I want to combine both an oil change and general inspection at the same time. Though once I had to take it in because the previous mechanic over-tighten the drain plug and I simply could not loosen it when I was changing the oil myself.

No I totally agree. If its a chain or dealership, somewhere I know they have money to fight incompetence/negligence, Id certainly do it.

If its gonna be a single mom & pop shop that you dont know anything about them Id understand your hesitation for risk.

Id rather not change it myself. And the professionals havent messed up yet. Im sure I would, though. I dont wanna drain anything. And waste my time when I could be getting other stuff done. Im always busy.

Also, if the place messes something up, they should pay for it. When the mechanics broke something on my car, they ordered the replacements part and put it on.

I had Jiffy Lube strip the drain plug and fuck up the oil pan. Emailed their corporate office and had them buy a new plug and pan.

There's a good garage near me that specializes in European cars. Guys been there 30 years and works with his son. So far so good. Checks the belts and hoses while I'm there. Does everything but the dealer's free car wash.

Like others have said I can change it myself, but I'd rather be doing something else.

Yep. Once you find a trustworthy shop, stick with them. I found the shop I've used for the last 15 years by looking for a good selection of sports and performance cars in the parking lot. Car folk are picky about how their cars are cared for. I do my own maintenance, but take my cars in for state inspection and occasional things that need a chassis hoist.

The service takes 15 minutes, it's the 10 people scheduled before you that make you wait. At my work the lube techs bring cars in for service as they arrive based on appointment time. Walk in customers are told they will wait two hours.

You'll also get better service taking your car to the dealership that sells that brand. I.E. don't be the fucker that brings a Benz to a Honda dealership expecting a 30 minute service.

One would think that but dunno how/why the shop that stripped the drain plug and pan on my friend's van got away scotfree. I think too much time simply passed in between from when the shop did the change and when my friend did the change himself and found out it was stripped.

When they screw/strip your oil bolt, or don't leave it tight enough so the oil drips out and over time you never realize it, and then you blow a head gasket, lemme know how that $3000 new engine works out for ya.

Idiots. Work on your cars. Do it yourself. No headaches. Oil change takes 20 mins top.

Also, my car (now a Maxima) takes premium. No oil change is $15-20. It's like $60-80 in a shop. You must have a shitty civic.

It depends on where you get it changed, I believe. Anyway, Ive been getting it changed at the dealership since I had a number of free oil changes after buying it. Id rather not work on my car. Im sure if I did, it would turn out worse. Im can work on a B-1 because I trained to do that. But Im not a car mechanic. Id rather have someone specialized do that. Not everyone has the knownhow to do that, nor does everyone have the time. If you do, good for you. But youre the idiot if you really want to called us that for not workong kn our own cars. Some guys at my job love to do that. And thats good for them. Some take it to a mechanic. And that works for them. Personally, Id rather take it to a. Echanic who actually knows how to do stuff than try to do something myself and mess up. Besides, if its dripping enough that its bad, you should notice. You should be checking under you car for leaks before going anywhere. And should see if you car has been leaking like at home in you driveway. And if it is, immediately go back to where your oil was changed. If its not leaking enough to tell after you car has been sitting in the same spot overnight, itll probably not a bad leak. It would also donyou well to check you oil using the dip stick every once in a while. So, you should noticed before it really becomes an issue.

No it isnt. Unless you go somewhere that charges way too much. I can go to Walmart or Costco and get full synthetic for just over 40 bucks. But also it takes maybe 20 minutes to do it yourself but it takes virtually no time to check and make sure they didnt fuck it up and then I dont have to change into shitty clothes, crawl under my car and then gojo my hands afterwards. And you'll notice if you're leaking oil unless you're completely unobservant
