I have entered the dark realm of 5 digit trophies. I should probably just stop before I get in too deep.

The last 7 weeks of my life have been this game. I even limited my time with Smash Ultimate to play Red Dead Online. I thoroughly enjoyed my time moseying through this world although I could see how someone with less patience than myself could come to dislike it. Rockstar wanted to make sure you saw everything in this game they spent 8 years making and refused to bend. Other than the occassional fast travel via coach/train or from the camp map, everything you do in this game pretty much takes the same amount of time it would if you were doing it in real life. IT'S TOO REAL. I WOULD JUST STAND STILL AND STARE AND THINGS FOR AWHILE.

I played my Arthur super honorable all the way and I think that benefits where the story goes with his tuberculosis diagnosis and righting as many wrongs he could before kicking the bucket at the end of chapter 6. There are 4 different endings for Arthur based on your honor and a decision you make in the last mission of chapter 6 and I feel like I got the best one ignoring the money and helping John escape from Dutch and Micah. I loved seeing Dutch again and his descent from charismatic leader to essentially a crazed killer and I wanted to murder Micah every step of the way so I commend Rockstar for making a good villain.

The epilogue you play as John Marston 8 years later (still 4 years before the start of RDR1) and basically doing what he needs to do to get his family back together and build his ranch at Beecher's Hope and then finally getting revenge on Micah for what he did to the gang. It reminded me how much I loved RDR1 and how much I enjoy playing as John Marston. Arthur was great and I loved him, but John is still the true #1. He's everyone's favorite idiot. The ending is very foreboding knowing how RDR1 plays out too with the Rockstar equivalent of the FBI tracking John down after his actions against Micah so that they can kidnap Abigail and Jack to set up RDR1. After I finished it all I ended up rewatching all the cutscenes from RDR1 to see it through to the end once again

Red Dead Online is still in beta and probably has nowhere near the amount of features it'll have down the line, but for what's there I certainly didn't enjoy it as much as I did the original Red Dead Online. The microtransaction system certainly didn't help much, but even then there's only 8 story missions to do and then you're just kinda left to do whatever. I ended up doing horse races a lot because it was fun and I was better at it than the deathmatches.

Anyway this platinum is a lot of things. The main goals are getting 100% in single player, getting 70 Gold Medals in story mode and reaching rank 50 in Red Dead Online as well as studying/skinning every animal in the game. There were a few missable trophies early on, but they're all mainly related to doing gang activities in chapters 2-4 before everything goes to hell and the gang starts dying/breaking up. Sadly no in-game timer, but between single player and multiplayer it had to be around 300 hours combined doing all this. Beats out Monster Hunter World for the most time I spent on a platinum in 2018 although still nowhere near the likes of Star Ocean 4 or White Knight Chronicles. I started feeling the grind where I wanted to be done about halfway through Red Dead Online but I never felt it all throughout my single player playthrough I always found myself enjoying the time I was spending with it.

Overall this is a really good game and worthy of being on any top 10 list this year. However I think I would still give the edge to Red Dead Redemption 1 for best Rockstar game!
