God fucking damnit. I wish people would do even the slightest bit of research into a game. There's no reason for Bethesda to even feel bad about it now. This game made them shit tons of money for barely any fucking work. Once you buy it, they've made their money.

Pokemon would have beat them if it wasn't two games, and the other stuff have been out longer. So they got a good push with per-orders. If they were doing so well they would not be 39 dollars right now. So they beat games that were already out ... that is not a win.

If they didn't have the fallout name with it then , they would not have done that.

Also, keep in mind that Pokemon Let's Go Eevee/Pikachu are Switch exclusive titles and they're not even mainline Pokemon games, plus it's a dual-release so sales will naturally be cut in half, so of course they're going to sell less than a multiplatform, unless I'm missing something.

Red Dead at the end of the month. There was huge competition in November and they deliver a shit game that barely operates and still made it into the Top 5. It's fucking ludicrous.

Say what you want about something like Madden making the Top 5 in a month, at least the game fucking works.

Red Dead released like a whole 4 weeks before 76 though.

I'd imagine most of the people that wanted it either bought it close to release or are gonna try to get it for Christmas.

Not to mention 76 went half-price for Black Friday, so that probably helped it a bit.

NPD's count total money earned, not copies sold. So dropping the price likely hurt their NPD's, or at least balanced out.

It's part of the reason most 3DS games never made the Top 10 even if they sold like gangbusters, since they are less expensive.

Or they dropped the price to be aggressive in a competitive market and because the game has microtransactions so they're willing to take the hit.

Hitman 2 also dropped the price and it is nowhere to be seen. That's a game that failed.

November is one of the biggest months of the year for games. You don't rank in the top 5 and be failing to make money. If that was the case the video game industry would be failing.

According to Mat Piscatella Pokemon would only be third place even if combined.

I'm also not sure I buy the Pokemon excuse considering combined Sun/Moon were number 1 for their month, and they are HALF the price of LGPE. But yeah that still doesn't mean the game isn't successful. It still has the second highest Switch debut after all.

Of course. But what I'm getting at is that for all of the people that already bought RDR2 prior to the release of Fallout 76, there wasn't really much competing with Fallout 76.

The Pokemon games were Switch exclusives while Fallout 76 is on PS4 and Xbox One so they're not in direct competition.
Battlefield V had its own controversy to deal with.

And two of the other big releases for that month were Remastered Collections, one for a game series that isn't really relevant anymore.

Where did I say I'm supporting it? I called it aggressive.

Most games this holiday did it. Only the Nintendo games, BLOPSIIII and RDR2 avoided it as far as I know.

Hitman Absolution sold 3.6 million in its first few months. It was considered a sales disappointment for Square-Enix at the time.

We know from the UK retail release that Hitman 2 was 90% down from Absolution. Things are looking dire for the franchise now unfortunately.

Witcher 3 is one of the best selling games of the generation... it's not impossible to make a single player game do well.

Again, Hitman is a niche, and has always been a niche title. Even the power of Square-Enix and all their advertising didn't push it into impressive numbers.

3.7 million in the first few months isn't niche. But it was also 6 years ago.

God of War has sold over 5 million copies, Spider-Man is almost at 6 million copies. Since last year, Star Wars Battlefront 2 combined has sold maybe 6.5 million copies.

Make a good game and it sells, doesn't matter if it's multiplayer, single player, online always, etc. etc.

Only game that's close to being linear is God of War. That ended up being a huge 30 hour game with a shitload of side content and is one of the highest reviewed games of all time. Spider-man is an open world game and Battlefront 2 is a multiplayer game.

Hitman 2 is a good game and it isn't selling. Prey, Dishonored 2 and Wolfenstein 2 were all good and they didn't sell. Even the last two Tomb Raider games were solid and they didn't sell too well.

In order to be a single player game that sells well you basically need to be a critically acclaimed open world game or an entry of a long, established IP.

That's basically the definition of being less popular than a decade ago.

Meanwhile Fallout 76 is a buggy mess that still sells because it's got multiplayer.

To the credit of those games they're all over a million units sold now. Fallout might get there as well, but I imagine it'd have one heck of a hard time reaching it. Like I said, Piscatella expects it to drop hard very soon. And bad word of mouth will only hurt it even more.
