North Korea said Thursday it will never unilaterally give up its nuclear weapons unless the United States first removes what Pyongyang called a nuclear threat. The surprisingly blunt statement jars with Seouls rosier presentation of the North Korean position and could rattle the fragile trilateral diplomacy to defuse a nuclear crisis that last year had many fearing war.

The latest from North Korea comes as the United States and North Korea struggle over the sequencing of the denuclearization that Washington wants and the removal of international sanctions desired by Pyongyang. The statement carried by the Norths official Korean Central News Agency also raises credibility problems for the liberal South Korean government, which has continuously claimed that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is genuinely interested in negotiating away his nuclear weapons as Seoul tries to sustain a positive atmosphere for dialogue.

The Norths comments may also be seen as proof of what outside skeptics have long said: that Kim will never voluntarily relinquish an arsenal he sees as a stronger guarantee of survival than whatever security assurances the United States might provide. The statement suggests North Korea will demand the United States withdraw or significantly reduce the 28,500 American troops stationed in South Korea, a major sticking point in any disarmament deal.

Remember when the right acted as if this was one of Trump's major wins. I guess they are just not going to bring this up now.

The United States had a serious plan to nuke the fuck out of the Chinese border so that Chinese reinforcements wouldn't enter into North Korea (as the area would be full of radiation). The president at the time fired the general that suggested using this tactic shortly after it was brought up.

order of events:

1) trump threatens tariffs if china does not embargo NK coal over their nuclear program
2) china embargoes NK coal
3) NK offers talks on denuclearizing
4) NK/SK relations warm
5) trump imposes tariffs anyway
6) china ends embargo on NK coal
7) NK reneges on all offers from nuclear talks

Not very surprising, I cant imagine NK will feel safe denuclearizing. Its pretty much the only way for them to guarantee no invasion.

pretty much.

even somebody who buys into the propaganda should see the logic behind not trusting the US government's word.

It literally was nothing but a PR stunt and used as propaganda for Kim. It's nothing but a colossal failure.

And that's a small skirmish imagine the damage a full fledged exchange between nuclear powers would do. It would be akin to boiling a lobster in an air proof container.

particularly given that trump broke it soon after the summit with kim, yes.

also that he broke our agreement with iran. and the paris climate accord. and NAFTA. and his threats to leave NATO.

broadly, trump is individually, uniquely, exclusively responsible for the entire world viewing the US as unstable and untrustworthy, liable to elect a new executive who will undo existing treaties and deals every 4 years. that he has also demonstrated a willingness to violate his own deals is just an extra-special dose of mistrust. imposes fear of what our voters will do in the future.
