1. No taunts in quickplay. I don't know if they did this to try and curb taunt parties, or just because people were salty. It damn sure didn't accomplish the former because now people just crouch spam.

2. Punishing players for not playing, which is "unsporting behavior". This means that if you end up in a taunt lobby, you will get punished... For not participating, or quitting. This also means you will get punished if you decide not to double team in a Team Smash where your opponent's teammate is eliminated.

3. You also get punished for disconnects that aren't even your fault. Another player could drop and it could potentially drop the whole match, and you'd actually get banned from playing for 30 minutes. This isn't necessarily common, but the fact that it happens at all is incredible.

4. P2P and input lag. If you've been playing Smash online for a while, esp since Brawl, then I'm sure you're no stranger to lag spikes causing inputs to not register. Why on earth hasn't Nintendo just made a dedicated server for these games? It's not like they can't afford it. It wouldn't end connection problems permanently but I imagine it'd be a million times more reliable than what we're dealing with right now.

5. Fixing what ain't broke. Smash 4's online was far from perfect, but the modes you could select were (mostly) just right. Team Smash needed a stock option, but other than that, it was great, and very non-intrusive in terms of playing match types you were in the mood to play. They fucked this up big time, getting rid of all these match types, and making one big ranked randomizing shitshow, forcing players to play what they don't want to play, and punishing you for backing out of it unless you decide to close the game before the match loads up. This also royally fucks over people who want to play Team Smash, because guess what: almost nobody has that for a preference. And with the matchmaking update, you'll end up in lobbies where you can't find anybody, instead of just... fixing it. You wind up losing GSP because you didn't win a FFA shitshow with items on on PAC-LAND. I don't mind playing goofy for-fun matches like that, but it's actually very stupid to make obvious luck-based matches ranked. Which leads me to my next point

6. Elite Smash. I don't know what they were thinking, but they clearly weren't thinking very long-term when they came up with this. I guess they were trying to separate the really good from the really bad, but it's obviously not working, especially I'm coming across people with half my GSP. The idea that you drop out from the top percentile of Smash players because you lose matches with items enabled on some of the worst stages known to mankind, is pretty funny. I'll concede that on Battlefield/Omega stages with no items on, luck isn't really much of a factor whether you're playing FFA, Team Smash or 1v1 unless you think about input lag. But as you know, you're not always going to play these matches. So be careful to do REAL good and hope a hammer doesn't spawn next to your opponent if you want to stay in the elite club.

7. If you care about maintaining GSP, you probably shouldn't play 1v1s. Because you lose significantly more GSP losing a 1v1 than you do if you lose a FFA. Hell, you gain GSP if you finish 2nd place in a FFA. Wouldn't be an issue if I could just play the modes I want to like in the previous game, but I can't.

8. Can't pick characters between matches. How in the mother of fuck did they manage to screw this up? Largest roster to date and they didn't figure maybe some people wanted to use more than one character? That's insane. So much short-sightedness here

8. Quality glitches. Sometimes the game drops your character skin, or even your controls. The first time I played a battle arena my right stick didn't do tilt attacks like I set it to. And my name was selected. Picking my name again fixed it, but jesus christ.

It's completely inexcusable for such an experienced company like Nintendo to fuck up the online for their biggest game this much. And now you're paying money for it. I'll keep playing, because I have a craving and I don't know any better, but holy shit man.

There are a lot of people that don't know about any of this besides input lag, and when has complaining to Nintendo ever done anything? It's patently obvious they want to keep things this way, the only thing I see getting fixed is not being able to pick a different character

No **** Sherlock. However, you bitch to people here first to help articulate and strengthen your arguments, THEN you go bitch to Nintendo. If you go with a fortified and clear opinion as opposed to some halfbaked thought out reactionary shout, Nintendo will better take your opinions more seriously.

It makes sense, though. Japanese business culture has serious issues with innovation. They make quality products, they just struggle with straying from their habits. In the case of Nintendo, theyve always made great games, but they havent kept up with online play. They have no idea how to offer a quality service because theyre completely out of touch. I remember reading a story about some younger workers playing a Western game and marveling at some of its features and an older executive phoo phooing it.

My big three are the

A.) Lumping in the FFA item-fest shitshows with ranking - those are fun on occasion, but getting punished for it is BS
B.) Changing characters between matches. Fucking embarrassing how they managed to leave that out.
C.) Removing the for fun / for glory separation. Sorta lumps in with point A, but still - they had all the game modes to please the majority. Just because you're missing a few time limit preferences, you're still gonna find a mode you like. They tried to please everyone by making so many possible rule sets and that fucked them over.
