Its my first time playing through this game. I did read through the Jobs FAQ here but Im not sure what I want to run because I dont want to end up having useless party members. Ive only played one game with a job system before and that was Octopath Traveler.

Any advice?

One of my favourite FF games, good choice.
In my opinion, trying different jobs / job combinations is part of the fun.
Unless you make very poor choices (like a berserk healer), they won't end up being useless anyways.
Oh, and buy spells as soon as possible, especially healing spells!
It's been a long time since I've played it though, so I don't remember an awful lot.

Just do whatever. Each job strengthens the Freelancer job IIRC, so your party will do just fine no matter the setup. I first played it a few years back without a guide and never had any trouble.
Now if you want to painstakingly think about jobs and skills, get yourself some FF Tactics after you finish this ;)

You're thinking too hard about it. This game is all about experimentation. Throw on a job to try it out, and if you don't like it switch it out. It's not like all the jobs are available at once immediately anyway.

Sometimes you'll want to switch jobs for some areas, so never feel bad about leveling the "wrong" jobs.

Except Berserker. Berserker is bad.

I would make sure someone is either a Blue Mage or has the "Learning" ability equipped at all times, though, if you don't want to look up where to get Blue Magic.

Only the highest stat effects freelancer. Thieves have the highest speed so if you master thief freelancer will have the theif's speed stat.

It's been years since I last played it, so I'll probably be way off.

Ignoring strategies that break the game, I guess you should decide in advance what role each character will have (eventually you'll have 4) and build a varied party (e.g. a melee fighter, a defensive mage, an offensive mage, etc.).

As Tar says, you should be OK as long as you do anything that's really out there. Your options are limited for a while anyway as you unlock jobs gradually through the story.

The cool thing is that you can equip an ability from another class as long as you've learned it, so using a class for a bit and then ditching it isn't necessarily a waste.

As for specific classes, I remember the Time Mage being pretty good with its Quick spell, among others. I think Samurai and Ninjas are decent too. Oh, and Summoners.

The Summoner requires that you complete certain quests, so don't miss them. At least that class gives you an added incentive.

I didn't hate the game but several of the bosses were just absurdly difficult.

Like that one airship boss, the cannon thing, holy crap did that thing stomp me into the groung like a hundred times.

But in fairness that could have been because I didn't understand all the statuses. For some reason my attack power and my HP would both just drain constantly until I was dealing single-digit damage. Until the time I tried and it just... didn't. Inexplicably.

There's no way to have a useless party member because you can change jobs at will and everyone can be the same thing. 3x Monk + White Mage can be very effective against some bosses, for example.

At endgame, your final job will be the Freelancer or Mime class. Freelancer, notably, auto-gets ALL passives from classes you've master. So mastered monk+ninja+samurai = automatic counter, dual wield, and super evasion. Mimic, otoh, gets 3 assignable slots which is better for mage-types so they can go White Magic+Red Magic+Time Magic or something.

General tips:

- Always have someone with white magic on the crew, either as an active job class or secondary skill. Same with Time Magic, once it's available. Haste is very worthwhile and once you get aoe shell and protect (and haste) use them at every boss.

- Black magic is meh, personally. I prefer Mystic Knights, although they often have to burn an initial turn to self-enhance.

- For whatever strange reason, Knights' passive of "hold a weapon in both hands for double damage" is never automatic. Even as a freelancer you need to burn a slot to equip it so it's rarely worthwhile.

- Animal/Elemental from the Hunter/Geomancer classes are wonderful midgame secondary ability for your mages for decent damage output while costing 0 MP. At lategame this gets replaced with DragonSword, from the Dragoon, because it lets them spam high damage/healing spells and then self ether on the fly.

- General comp of two fighters / two mages works fine. Comp of everyone being both fighter and mage also works. When a physical class equips a magical secondary, they gain a bunch of MP and magic stat so they're roughly identical to being said mage class.

- Blue Mages are fun enough, but involve some babysitting and sometimes the Mediator class to control certain bad guys.

- Max level red magic enables you to doublecast. So red mage with white magic secondary or vice versa = protectga and curaga in the same action.

Eh not really. I just kept somebody learning at all times and got everything except maybe five or ten blue spells. If that's too much guide, then sure.

There's one that I have no idea how anybody found lol

Don't worry too much: FFV isn't very hard.
Here's a tip: characters who can equip rods can use them as an item. You have to go into the item menu and scroll up and select it. Though, of course, you can freely equip a rod via the item menu and then immediately "break" it. Rods can be expensive, but the fire/ice/thunder ones cast -aga level magic, so it's kind of busted.

blue? yes, imo.

Summoner is mostly organic. You'll be fine. A few are missable but it's basic sidequest areas that you'll stumble across "naturally" and/or they suck anyways.

FFII comes to mind. If you get to the final boss having sold your blood swords, you might as well just look up the ending on youtube.

True. But the vast majority of jrpgs (especially SNES area) are relatively forgiving when it comes to party/build choices.

Do you mean mastering your first set of jobs because damn that sounds hella tedious. Water crystal jobs aren't the best but you should definitely swap in like a Mystic Knight or something.

I wont but I know the replacement skews more towards magic. So I made him a Time Mage for the time being because it seems like a magic class that works fine without stats to back it up

Also Im assuming iOS is the GBA version

I think it also depends on how you leveled up. I just know he was healing himself for 2-3k on most turns with that physical attack and I couldn't outpace it.
