Does Chrom have better recovery skills that I didn't notice or something? Seems like he has to be one of the worst characters in the entire game as far as off stage recovery. How can he be rated "that" high?

Zero pretty much did every smash except 64 and was approaching top 4 players in Melee at his heyday (according to Armada, aka top 1-2 player on Melee for the longest time) but moved to Brawl and Project M in the middle of his climb. He was the top player in Brawl and Smash 4 based on tournament points and held the position just about as long as he played the game, though he retired from Smash 4 early when Bayonetta was released

It's not a big exaggeration to say he's one of the greatest Smash players of all time just on statistics, but he gets upset in the weirdest way sometimes lmfao. He's probably pretty reliable in terms of character opinions, but even he says it's not absolutely final, and like ~6 places within the tier list don't really have a significant difference and can win against the other pretty evenly

K. Rool is definitely good, but he's more the noob killer that people just need time to figure out.

Best thing K. Rool's got are his super armor moves. You can pretty easily shield through it

Kirby is officially considered the weakest char in Melee atm. He's low tier in Brawl and bottom tier in Smash 4. In this game he's not any better. He's just a much slower, clunkier Jigglypuff, which sucks because I love Kirby. Look at my sig

as a kirby main i'm hoping for buffs but the ones that he actually needs (air speed and range) likely aren't coming

Defensive plays got nerfed. Meaning you need good to broken level of aerials and off stage shenanigans to be a good character, which Little Mac literally has none of.

low/mid at best, universally agreed to be bottom half/bottom third of the cast in 4

trying to find the best mac main was pretty much impossible because none performed consistently in tournament since certain matchups totally invalidated him

He just has really good frame data, kills early, great range without being held back by Roy's sourspot, etc. But he has no off-stage defense so... He's not top tier no matter what way you look at it

Chrom's off stage defense doesn't really matter that much. Most characters in Ultimate kill far earlier than in Smash 4. Off-stage offense makes a character good, but a bad off-stage defense doesn't make a character bad because if you were off-stage, you were gonna die more often than not anyways. If you see tourneys, gimps can happen but super low % gimps don't happen unless the characters were built around it.

That's why Chrom's insanely powerful stage game matter more than making it back to the stage, because he has great off-stage offense as well.

Also Aether suicide kills the other person first

That's kinda why Mac is considered one of the worst characters and why that isn't changing

mac isn't just a bad character because of his recovery

he's a character with garbage aerials in a game all about aerials and range

that's also why chrom is so good in comparison. he has both of those things

I liked playing Little Mac initially, but after experience Pikachu's amazing off-stage game, I feel so gimped whenever I try to use him now.

Mac is bad because his only strength isn't even top tier. A ton of characters have much better stage game than Mac does, and Mac literally doesn't have ANY aerials or recovery.

Compare that to Chrom who murders people at an advantage every time

Also he snaps to the ledge if you aim right. That's better than most of the unga bunga straight upwards recoveries in the game.

low percent gimps for the most part aren't a thing in this game because of the way the ledge works. so chrom's weakness isn't as significant

How exactly does a slower and shorter ranged character combo Chrom off the stage exactly? Keep in mind Chrom also has a much greater range of attack in the air than Jiggs as well, while Mac doesn't.

I can't tell if you're the same guy that was bashing Chrom pre-release, but there's some serious weird bias coming from you lol

His f-air (or nair) isn't going to come out quicker than jiggs' so range isn't relevant. Your best bet is to dodge. Many fighters can get combo'd off stage and it's easier to bigger your hurtbox is, but it won't work against someone like Bowser or K. Rool whose recoveries actually punish that

Chrom has really good frame data and range but it's very obvious that people don't know how to exploit his glaring weakness yet in the same way people didn't learn how to exploit Mac's (obviously more exacerbated) weakness. Can't say the same for Inkling who's just really good all-around and can be pretty tough to approach.

Maybe it's different in Smash, but in most fighters, even if something is faster, it'll lose if it doesn't reach and the slower attack does.

Yeah it's a very few frame difference at best, but range matter far more than what comes out first lol, especially when the difference in negligible. Also Chrom does land cancelling far better than Jiggs can.
