Let's say Nintendo went overboard and added every single character they created and still own (plus the series from the 3rd party representatives) as a spirit. How many do you think there would be?

Generics count.

In terms of cases like Pokemon trainers I would go by unique sprites since there isn't really anything that differentiates them or else we'll have a bunch of bug catchers that are only there because they had names.

Fire Emblem:
-All Lords

-All enemy unit classes
-All bosses and other NPCs

Final Fantasy:
-All party members from every game including spin-offs
-All NPCs
-All bosses
-All enemy classes

I think those three alone would be massive.

5 elite four/champion
say 30 trainer types

that's around 400 for the mainline games + Colosseum and XD. I was also generous with the number of trainer types

What about the spinoffs? Ranger, Conquest, Mystery Dungeon etc.

And I just realized you can inflate the number by counting each different Unown letter

Edit: And just as Groudon and Kyogre also have Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre, we can add Mega Evolutions to the list. Let's add Primal Dialga and XD001 as well 'cause why not

Don't forget some characters have multiple spirits for different versions of them. And not just the ones that evolve.

So, does each version of Mario gets their own Goombas, Koopas, Cheep-Cheeps, etc? Like you have to get the Mario 1 Goombas, Mario 3 Goombas, Mario 64 Goombas, etc.?

Because every single Mario character in each game over and over is going to be a lot of spirits.

I think we would have to go against what's done in Ultimate and only use one version of each person. So a Goomba is a Goomba (unless it's a specific named Goomba).

Though I can see exceptions like Baby Mario should be its own spirit as he appears alongside Mario in games, even if they are supposedly the same person.

Though what about people like Mr. L and Black Knight who are Luigi and Zelgius. Or Mega forms of Pokemon as they revert back to their usual self after a battle.
