After reading some posts on the matter as well as learning about them through my own experiences, I think they should be regulated - at least when it comes to younger children. Loot boxes exploit children and cause their families to fork over a lot of money to gaming companies.

I'd rather any random prize you pay for be banned. If you want to be able to buy cosmetics that you want, that's fine with me. Having to rely on chance for a RARE COSTUME is shady business practice.

Regulate it like gambling. If you can buy loot boxes for real money in a game it can only be sold to people 18+.

Why not just ban them? There's no valid reason to have them

Loot boxes trigger the same psychological tics as gambling, and we regulate gambling.

videogames like jrpgs do it in a sense, but you pay all up front for the whole package, and the imaginary gear you are getting isn't something you have to put a dollar in every time you want to roll the percentages

There's no way to regulate ages or the people who get addicted to them. Just make it so you can earn premium currency through challenges.

FPS example:

Platinum crate is 10,000 game currency.

You can gain 10,000k in a week if you fulfill weekly challenges.

-get a 20 streak kill online
-beat x level on y or harder etc

Lootboxes would be fine, if you didn't have to pay real money to obtain them.

They only really work when they're rewards for finishing quests/missions/challenges, it also helps if the contents are better defined/thematic instead of "endless grab-bag of greys". Like here's one with 5 Event things in it, you get 5 of that particular box, you have literally all the things in it. Here, have one for free, now go earn the remaining 4 by actually playing while the event is going on.

IT. IS. THAT. FUCKING. SIMPLE.

But leave it to developers to fuck up what *could* have just been an alternate, potentially more exciting way of distributing unlockables. Literally could have made every accomplishment feel like opening a surprise present because you never knew what you were going to get, but never had to worry about *not* getting what you wanted because you would have everything by the time you unwrapped the last gift. Why, we could even call them "giftboxes". Truly a revolutionary concept.

I'm more referring to the rare drop system in games like WoW or oldschool RPGs. It was a delight to get a rare drop, but you didn't have to pay for some box that may or may not have anything good in it or what you want. You simply fight the enemy until it drops or get it by luck throughout the course of the adventure.
