He's easy to relate to but he's also a massive jerk and a huge cause of a lot of the drama (both early and later on).

Breaking Bad is good at making you root for the wrong people.

Well the main characters are the "bad" guys after all.

Skyler's annoying because she just grinds the story to a halt with her bullshit. It's not interesting.

Because he's a good example of a good kid who went down a wrong path in life. Throughout the series he almost always had a conscience, something that Walt largely lacked. He also made a bunch of stupid decisions, but still wasn't a particularly bad person. Him killing Gale was a small turning point for him, but he did it to save Walt and himself ultimately.

The only thing I knew about Breaking Bad going into it was that Skyler was a horrible, terrible, rancid bitch (according to my roommate). After watching it, I really don't see what's so bad about her.

Right? She's trapped in a horrendous situation from all sides and she starts to break down emotionally. Her behavior always struck me as totally normal.

Since the whole point of Walt's character arc is to slowly make him a terrible person and an antagonist rather than a protagonist, it makes sense that his wife would do things that run counter to his plans. That does sort of present issues from a viewing standpoint since the viewer is meant to identify with Walt and thus anything that foils him is 'bad' or 'ruins the progression', but I really don't see any other way to have her act that would make any sense.

There are tons of shows where the protagonist is a massive piece of shit but you still root for them and hate the actual good, normal people. Take narcos as an example of that

I love that scene in BCS in Season 1 where Mike tells the dude that "you're a criminal now, but it's up to you if you're a bad guy" kind of thing.

Jesse really pissed me off when it finally seemed like he was turning his life around and then he threw it all out the window.

Skylar was a total bitch throughout. She did some really dumb shit even before she knew what was going on with Walt (and when he had a perfectly good excuse to be acting strangely)

I can't speak from experience but I imagine having an immediate family member and the father of your kids diagnosed with terminal cancer is sort of a major fucking psychological stressor. That and Walt is a terrible liar so she knew he was lying constantly long before she figured out why.

Funny enough, in a real life perspective, you'd relate to Skyler far more than you would watching as the audience.

For real though, she's one of the more sensible people in the show, you just don't see that from an audience perspective.

Walt was a kickass liar tbh. Or at least he became one later on. I don't remember if it was different at the beginning.

He always takes on the same cadence and demeanor when telling a bullshit story. He always goes way into unnecessary detail. He avoids eye contact. It's actually a testament to Cranston's acting that it's so consistent. From the first time he does it Skylar sees right through it as you would expect of a couple that's been married a long time.

I'll definitely agree that his method is very formulaic and it makes sense that Skyler knows when he's doing it. But he can improv and remain calm consistently, and they make it a point later on to show that Skyler can't lie as well as he can. Other than Skyler (and to some extent Walt Jr.) he can consistently bullshit all the other characters, including Jesse.

That's why her first intuition is to check the voicemail when Walt leaves. She knows her husband.
