York Spratling, 84, was a resident at the Consulate Health Care in Jacksonville.

In 2017, Spratling was rushed into surgery to remove dead tissue on his genitals.

He died a short time later and his family claim staff failed to look after him.

A review found his death was due to inadequate supervision and neglect.

trash. the elderly are always being abused/neglected, but it's very telling about this nation when we allow shit like this to happen to it's veterans.

Ive worked in nursing homes for a long time, if the resident is difficult and the CNAs dont care theyll go a week+ without a shower if a family member doesnt notice

people always say this when they have no idea how hard it is to care for an elderly person with dementia or kidney failure or some other debilitating disease. hope you have enough money saved up to quit your job, or make enough to hire a nurse because it's a 24 hour job

I've always wondered what a fair balance is in those instances.

Making life comfortable for someone enduring the rigors of age vs. you just trying to live your life and focus on your own goals.

I've worked in a nursing home. It's a very demanding job for very little pay.

The one I worked at is one of the newer, nicer "retirement communities with memory care wings". They are leaps and bounds better than older convalescent homes. I walked in the front door and thought I was at the wrong place. It reminded me of a ski lodge.

But once I started working I realized how understaffed we were. We had an average of about 50 residents requiring various levels of care. You know how many caregivers were on at one time? Four. And most of the larger immobile residents required at least two people for moving, showering, and changing.

The administrator told me when I was hired that it cost between two and ten thousand dollars A MONTH to live there, depending on the size of the room and the level of care. Know how much the caregivers got paid? $11.25 an hour. You could go down the street to In n' Out and earn more.

I don't have to wonder, I know. Me and my brother had to take care of our ailing father last year in lieu of him wanting to be put into a home.

After only a few months and upon his death, me and my brother were physically, mentally, and emotionally fatigued beyond explanation (with my brother in particularly still suffering from crippling back problems a year later and my depression having reached peak levels to where I'm told constantly I should seek professional help), and we were financially destroyed to the point we ended up homeless for months and couldn't even cover cremation costs. (Our dad's estranged sister came out of nowhere and paid for it, before promptly disappearing from our lives again.)

How anyone takes care of the elderly for a *living* I can't even imagine, I barely survived 4 months.

the point is that if a veteran is allowed to be disrespected on this level, literally anybody can get it. there are no standards. sigh...

it literally happens ALL the fucking time. I have lost count of how many patients i've admitted to med-surg and the intensive care unit because they've been in a nursing home or long term facility where no one took care of them properly.

Again, ur wrong. Its getting attention because its a veteran and thus more inflammatory. If it was some random joe schmo alcoholic with no family living in a nursing home, no one would gaf and thats not right.

and btw I also work at the VA, inpatient and primary care clinic.

That's exactly how it is. I took care of my grandma with dementia for two years and people don't realize how stressful and scary it can be. They won't eat enough unless you get them to, they'll do things like turn the oven on and forget or stumble outside thinking they're doing something or looking for someone. It's hard to even go to bed because some people with Alzheimers tend to get up in the middle of the night and think it's morning, and end up doing god knows what while you're asleep. And those are the early to moderate stages. Taking care of someone in a severe state becomes a full time job and they need round the clock care.

specifically, what am I wrong about? using what I actually said and not what you whatever you added in your mind. if the nation's heroes can get it, anybody can get it.

what's wrong with the above statement? and what does your Joe Schmoe have to do with this particular topic?

also, what do you expect me to take from you pointing out that you work at the VA?

you're misinterpreting why the emphasis is on him being a veteran. cant believe i needed to actually write that out and you couldn't simply infer it.

it's your intent behind the statement that I'm trying to interpret, but you're not being clear. I'll make it more elementary for you, too. since you're into holding hands with me now.

are you complaining that this veteran is getting attention "only" because he's a veteran? why did you even make such a statement in this topic? obviously everybody deserves equal quality care, but it seems like you were diverting attention from this man in your initial post. #12

so I redirected you to the point.
