I thought I found my dream job when I was able to move to Japan, but the longer you live somewhere, the more normal it becomes.

On the topic of anime, all the typical (legal) anime websites do not work in Japan so you are left with illegal streaming sites. I also believed the rumor that downloading anime would get you in more trouble here so I avoided that. Ultimately, because watching anime was more troublesome than enjoyable, I put it on hold.

But the longer I've been away from watching anime, the less appealing it becomes. I'll see occasional screen caps but honestly, it all looks the same now. My non-anime-watching friends would always comment about how every anime looks the same but because I was so invested in it, I could see all the minute differences. Now I see what my friends saw.

Ever since I moved to Japan, I just binge interesting-looking shows that pop up on Netflix. I never watch series weekly anymore.

VPNs, my friend. A lot of sites are blocked in Europe too and it's only going to increase.

For me the good thing about anime (and pretty much any type of media that has been around for a good while) is that even if the new stuff keeps getting worse and worse, there is still a lot of good stuff (be it classics or not) that you probably haven't watched yet.

To this day the only Miyazaki movie I've watched has been Spirited Away. I still haven watched a single episode of Evangelion nor any movie made by Satoshi Kon. I only mention these because they're at the top of my head, there is a lot of things that people consider absolute must watch that I haven't seen yet.

My anime/manga backlog is about as big as my videogame backlog and the only thing that has kept me from diving in is that I'm waiting just a little bit while I progress through my Japanese studies so I can enjoy it all in Japanese, or use it as means to further improve my Japanese :P

Try watching an anime called Thunderbolt Fantasy. It's done with like these puppets, but the camera work and voice acting is so great, and some of the actions legitimately will make your mouths go wide. They're all practical effects, which make the action have a lot more impact.

But yeah if I lived in Japan, I'd probably stop watching anime. I would hope some of the manga sites still work but if I lived there, I probably speak the language, so I could probably just buy some volumes.

I'd never work in an East Asian country in general though

I used to live in Japan (via military). Great experience. Hope to make it back someday and see how much it's changed. That's where I bought my first beer when I was 14.
