FF9 hit some kind of sweet spot of cohesive worldbuilding and narrative that I haven't seen in another jrpg. Like, even just the clothes. The clothes make sense. How often can you say that about a JRPG?

While I had played JRPGs prior to FFVII, it is actually the one that really sparked my interest in them.

9 had too many little issues IMO.

1) Zidane's tail. Stupid. I don't want the main character to be a monkey. Monkey's are gross and overplayed. Compare him with how Cloud looks. Cloud is way more badass.

2) Loading times. Battles took forever to load up. This alone caused many gamers to give up on this game. Compare the load times with FF7. FF7 moves right along at a healthy pace.

3) Soundtrack. Sure there's a few catchy songs. Lindblum, Treno, and Vivi's theme. The rest are quite boring. Compare the overworld music with FF7 for example. Night and day. Uematsu had clearly gotten lazy or lost interest by this point.

4) Steiner. Is this guy supposed to be a joke? Why? This is Final Fantasy dammit. I don't want joke characters that have such a huge role. Compare him to Cid or Barrett in FF7. Way lame.

5) Vivi. Okay it's cool he is a black mage. But he's like a kid. A kid? In my party in an FF game? Again...why? Im 15 years old dammit...i want BADASS characters in my party and as main protagonists...not literal kids. What the fuck?

6) Antogonist. Compare to Sephiroth. nuff said on that.

7) Magic system. Compare that to FF7's magic system. Not even close.

This. I tried replaying it but I lost interest after Midgar. The atmosphere of that city was one of the most amazing and enticing aspects of a video game for me ever... but once you leave the first time, the game just isn't the same.
