*grown up kids

A friend of mine became a qualified vet and ever since she started earning a vet salary her parents are treating her like a bank.

The stickler to me isn't that they're struggling as a family. It seems more like they're just really shitty, irresponsible spenders. The kind of people that keep their credit cards maxed out all the time.

On one hand I'm thinking fair enough, you treated them like a bank for 20 years.

On the other hand that doesn't seem like something a parent should do.

Just depends on the context of the situation. My parents are poor and I grew up poor, so I wouldnt mind helping them out when possible.

That's literally the whole point of raising kids.

I don't think that's why most people raise kids

It's annoying because it goes from being a need to situation. Say bills land at the wrong time and you keep their electricity from getting shut off or something.

Then it turns out you've opened the flood gates and there's always some reason more is needed. I've stopped arguing. Just toss my wallet toward my girlfriend and tell her to give them whatever. Fuck it.

They absolutely do so they'll have someone to look out for them when they're older.

Well I mean in that case, fair enough. Sounds like your sister would probably be happy to help too.

In this case though, we're talking about a girl who's getting her first ever salary paycheck at $25k internship salary, being asked by her parents (one of which is a senior architect) for cash because they keep buying silly shit they don't have actual money for.

I think it's pretty shameless.

I'm pretty sure most people don't decide to have kids primarly as a financial backup plan for old age.

Shitty investment really, you'd be better off starting a pension fund.

Nothing wrong with it, especially if the parents raised the kid and helped the kid out here and there over the years.

That's what the world wants. That's why people throw a hyphen and shaming onto every word so they don't have to feel the slightest air of judgement.

same as anything, as long as its not excessive and they're using their kids for luxuries. I don't ask my mom for money, she doesn't ask me for money.
