as you all may know im a teacher.

today i had 2 students of mine get into an argument. they're 3rd graders. one kid was tapping his pencil too loudly and another kid didn't like it. they started bickering about it when one kid decided to start talking trash about El Salvador. yes the other kid is el salvadorean.

he just laid into them saying all sorts of vile stuff about the people and how he wishes for them to be eradicated from the earth.

fucking hell man, hes 8 fucking years old and hes racist as shit.

fucking why?

Humans are naturally tribalistic and engage in othering behavior based on observed differences and similarities. This can manifest in many ways. One of which is racism.

We are also pattern-seeking by nature, which is handy, but also leads to false-positives. So, say you are white and you have a few experiences with seeing some black people engaging in criminal behavior, then we typically passively apply that trait to other blacks and are more wary of them.

Then we add the social element and those stereotypes are codified and reinforced.

That's how I see it anyway.

It's unfortunate, but it's just the way our brains work. We form and other each other and ourselves into categorical, compartmentalized groups all the time.

Sometimes it manifests in political party, sports team fandom, racial or ethnic group, religious organization, etc. Hell, even console fanboyism is a form of tribalism.

It is picked up from the social norms adults expressed, this applies to gender norms and other things.

lol if you are impressed by what 3rd graders know.. i guess you have not been that observant what younger then that can express. That or you forget how you looked at the world at that age.

also the basic view of "different" = "bad"

It's not really learned.

Specific examples of it would be, but it's really just an application of a natural human instinct to categorize and and be wary of other groups.

Often parents but sometimes it comes from bad luck. Like if the first four people of a certain demographic that a kid comes into contact with all happen to be assholes, it can cause them to make associations they don't understand aren't fair to make because they don't really get statistics yet.

You have to grow up around lots of different people. Most people in the US don't.
