They try to set up for a dream match finale, but it's not going to happen. You can't put one character on one side of a tournament and their rival on the other in hopes that they'll meet up. If they want Mario versus Sonic, or Mario versus Bowser, they need to pair them off so that one of these conflicts will be in the semi-finals or quarter-finals. Otherwise, they're not going to happen.
