A Colorado police officer who shot and killed a 73-year-old veteran who was protecting his family from an invader in his home will not face criminal charges, a district attorney announced Monday as body camera footage of the shooting was released.

Richard "Gary" Black Jr. was fatally shot three times by Officer Drew Limbaugh, one of the Aurora Police Department officers who responded to reports of a violent break-in at a home on July 30.

Another good guy just using his weapon for protection shot by the people he called to help him. I mean on one hand the couldnt know who was who upon arriving, on the other hand people keep saying more good guys, self defense etc...so what was the old man to do? Vigilante justice and not call the cops? Maybe we should start considering better options both ways?

Hmm...completely justifiable. The officer gave verbal commands and even repeated himself for the guy to drop his gun. Can't even argue with thugs like this who conduct mass shootings daily. There are the majority of the population and commit 90% of the mass shootings.

The reason the victim didn't drop his gun is he probably was in shock from having just killed the intruder and didn't hear any commands shouted at him.

I think it's more likely because his gun wasn't liquid.

Eh, don't know why they called the police to report it in the first place. I grew up in south Jamaica, Queens. This was a horrible area in the later 80's and early 90's. My dad actually had to shoot an intruder once and him and my older brother just dragged the hemorrhaging asshole out to the lawn and calmly explained the situation after a neighbor called the cops.

no one is above the concussion effect you get when firing a gun indoors with no hearing protection. the guy was also 70+ years old which doesnt help and most likely he was still out of it considering this JUST happened when the cops showed up.

so there you have a 70 year old with his ears ringing not being able to hear commands and walking into a room with people in the darkness of his own doorway pointing flashlights at him and all he did was instinctively point the flashlight up to see what was going on (he didnt even point the gun at them). it sucks even more that he tells the cops before he dies (in a disturbingly calm voice) where the guy they SHOULD have shot is.

this whole thing is fucking dog shit where police instantly think anyone with a gun is now a bad guy. whats the point in even calling the fucking cops any more? they statistically rarely ever get there in time to save you anyway and when they get there after you saved your self its still a toss up if you walk out of your own goddamn home alive.

Concussion effect has to do with brain damage from head trauma, not loud noises. In any case, nothing to do with shock. But I don't disagree with your explanation regarding hearing loss, you are probably right.

Because the cops are a violent gang and will always answer with escalated reprisal, like the postal worker in New York that got the shit beat out of him by the cops for committing the crime of giving someone directions.

Here's what my fellow 2A supporters need to realize, the police are one of the greatest threats to gun rights and if they don't support reforms then they'll see their rights erode as cops can continue to justify lethal force in ever more questionable situations.

Between this, the security guard in Cali, and the man in Alabama, if police can simply shoot you for having a weapon on you, and don't have to assume more risk than they currently do, you don't actually have gun rights.

Now, I'm not saying they need to assume so much risk that hundreds more die a year to save a couple innocent people, but there is clearly a problem with how they engage, and if they don't face legal consequences when they do kill an innocent . . .

Dude had easily 6 looooong seconds to comply, what else is the cop supposed to do? There's no green tag over our heads. A 100% unknown situation just had a bunch of gunshots go off.

Best case don't move towards them with the gun? I don't understand what we're mad at. If the person had bad intentions, the time they gave him is already dangerous.

I dont know man. Weve seen people get shot for less because it was thought he had a gun. This guy was shot before it was determined who was who. Now you add in the fact that theyll be rolling up to a situation where someone was already shot? Even in the situation you described, which sounds completely reasonable, it seems like there is still the possibility of getting shot, which is worrying. That possibility shouldnt be as high as it is.

First of all 6 seconds and nothing. I can barely comply with an order like "license and insurance" in 6 seconds.

Secondly, what if he didn't understand the cop properly?

Never understood this. Not necessarily saying that I've seen it in this topic, but in other similar topics, I've seen people say that an innocent person having a gun on them was justification enough to shoot them. Usually from the same damn people that fight tooth and nail for 2nd amendment
