I think complaining that Peter isn't some Bruce Wayne, Clark Kent or Tony Stark type is sort of missing the point. I find Tobey to be great as Peter but a meh Spider-man. But he rarely had any comedic lines to work with as Spidey so he never really had a chance in that regard. He absolutely captures Spidey being an underdog regular guy who has to deal with a lot of shit outside of being a superhero.
