DS had a massively broad appeal thanks to games like Brain Training and Nintendogs.

PSP didn't. It had clunky UMD discs and it tried to support a movie format which also failed.

Yeah that really surprised me too.

At the time I thought Nintendo was done for.

I remember a lot of people were wary of the DS when it released, but it kept throwing out hit after hit while the PSP didn't really go anywhere. The DS Lite was really sleek.

DS was cleverly marketed to everyone - even little old ladies who might want to play brain training via the touchscreen.

PSP was a great system, but who was it really for? People who wanted slightly cut down versions of their existing PS2 library?

DS was also cheaper than the PSP and much, much better marketed

PSP's UMD videos were a big ol' flop for sometimes being double the price of the DVD version, without any of the extras, and only being playable on the PSP. Sony did offer licencing for the UMD format, so you could build your own UMD video player, but no other businesses took them up on it.
