I watched it when I was a little kid and loved it. Watching it now and it's as good as I remembered. Ms. Trunchbull is hilarious lol

On hindsight trading psychic powers in order to fit in with 6th graders as a kindergartner is a horrible deal even though it's portrayed as a happy ending

actually she still has her powers she just doesn't have to use them very often, hence her ability to use her powers to bring a book to her at the very end

iirc that was the big difference between the ending of the movie and the original where she kept it in the movie but lost it in the book I might be misremembering though

Yep she did lose her powers in the book.
But at least it wasn't the original ending where Roald wanted to kill her off by having her try to lift a truck after an accident.

Matilda was happy though. She was never really interested in the telekinetic power, it was just useful.

Actually once read a cute little fanfic which put her in the MCU. She becomes interested in computed and gets recruited by Stark. Xavier eventually discovers her and offers her a place in his school, but she turns it down because she's not interested in learning more about the "brain stuff." She also creates a security program called A Grim And Tremendously Heartless Application....or AGATHA.

She could've been set for life doing one of a kind performances and any other task that can be trivialized with telekinesis but instead becomes a regular 6th grader.

Yeah, but she wasn't interested in being a show monkey. She wanted to learn shit.

Yeah the narrative made it out as a happy ending so of course it said she was content just skipping a few grades. It's just wasted potential when looking at it practically. She could probably learn a lot more with scientists who'd be interested in her telekinesis too.

I mean, you say she could learn a lot more, but all that would really entail is a bunch of people experimenting on her.

There's always one of those friendly scientists who become close with the protagonist and exposit everything to them.

Yeah, but this is a world where a school headmistress can swing a girl like a shot put and imprison children in a closet lined with broken glass, so I'm not sure I'd really trust any research institutes.

Well, when you put it that way fuck you're right. Maybe she should've just continued to train and hone it as a weapon and then take over the world once she's mastered it instead lol
