If I'm right, I don't mind being spoiled.

These dinguses never left the house and are all stuck in the red room, or my money back?

On to my real thoughts. Damn it's a mixed bag but when it's good, it's pretty damn good. When it's bad (yikes tier writing, acting, cgi at times) it really pulls me out. But I want to see how the mystery ends, I like all the clues, threads, and ghosts in most background shots I've seen so far. Nicely shot, but the scares are lacking heart so far.

There are some bads, but I think the goods outweight it a lot. I like the acting for the most part, especially the kids.

As for your theory: no, but the creator revealed he actually considered revealing that as an end twist but decided it was too dark. People think he should have done it.

You're not right.

I agree that the writing and acting leave much to be desired. Episode six really sticks out as being especially terrible

Lol nah

Absolutely. It was also shot horribly. Hated the constant panning shots.

Not literally, no.

But in a sense, you're part way to the correct answer.

This is objectively wrong, episode 6 is one of the best shot episodes in television history.

maybe i was blind but i didn't even know the ghost shots were a thing until the very end and i read up about it.

there was a VERY obvious one in episode 6 but even then i brushed it off as being somehow significant to the funeral.

anyways the show was different than i expected. less scary, more moody and atmospheric.

don't think you can really make a TV show as scary as a movie.

Weird because all I see is praise for episode 5 and 6, with 6 being one of the best episodes of television this year

You are literally the only person I've talked to that dislikes that episode.

Admittedly, a lot of my friends are filmmakers and in other art related fields, and we love shit like good long takes and tracking shots. That episode is a very technically impressive feat, between the camerawork, the performances, and everything in-between.

Plus it just looks damn good.

Being a huge fan of six feet under, maybe i just compare all funeral home/cemetery scenes to that and I felt it just wasn't good for me. I also love long shots (like the ghetto scene in true detective 1). This one was just too much slow movement and weird staging. I didn't like how they were all sitting in random chairs in that huge space and were all facing the same way. I thought the acting in that ep was weak too. I didn't buy their emotion.
I do actually appreciate your insights though. Interesting to see the other opinion.

@Dat_Cracka_Jax

At the end of the day all art is subjective, including TV. I know I kinda came outta the gate swinging, I honestly just thought you were trying to troll/be contrarian given all the praise I've seen given to that episode, but while I maintain that it was objectively good/impressive on a technical level, what you actually enjoy is definitely subjective, so sorry if I came off a little harsh.

Personally I thought the performances were great. They came off very cold and distant, but I felt that was the point. They were all so emotionally drained and tormented at that point that they weren't going to be as expressive, and the times that they did get more energetic/passionate felt earned and legitimate to me.

The weird staging I suppose makes sense as throwing some people off, but I feel like that also plays into the emotional distance between the characters, and allowed them to get away with cool shots like where they were replaced with the child actors of themselves or where they snuck in the bent neck lady/Nell while all still being part of the same take.

Again, I may also have a bias just because I know from experience how much work and effort it takes to pull off shots like that, and on a technical level I was simply amazed. When I first watched the episode I got like, 6 minutes in and was like "hold the fuck up, is this still on the same take?" and ended up backing it up and watching through it again just to appreciate them managing to get such a long take so smoothly.

Being able to act for over 15 minutes straight in one take with not even a single minor flub is impressive too, especially given as complex some of the movements they had to do were with some of the quick switches of characters, and if I remember correctly between the acting, the staging, the camera work, and general movement and blocking, it took them over a month of rehearsing.

Episode 5 Bent Neck Lady ep I think was by far the best episode of the season. If 6 is the funeral that one was wonderfully shot.

Haha, no worries. I wasn't offended. Again, I like your take and may have to view that episode again just to get it all. Thanks for the write-up

There were a few things here and there that I didn't care for, but my biggest gripe is something that 99+% would have no idea about...

Much of it takes place in Boston, and there are a few moments that imples the house itself is pretty close to the city. A ghost in the house says she likes the view of the city lights in the distance, and another character references a hospital in Boston as being the closest hospital. However, in one of the final episodes, a character is mentioned as being "a few miles east of Amherst" and on the way to the house. Amherst is 2 1/2-3 hours west of Boston, and had been travelling from Boston. If the house is near Boston, the character would have driven 2 1/2-3 hours west for no reason. I don't know if someone working on the show is from Amherst or graduated from one of the colleges in Amherst, but that did not make sense. That's a personal gripe and completely trivial detail that barely any viewers would catch, but as a lifetime resident of MA, I was like "now wait a damn minute >:/"

ep 5 was definitely the best

ep 6 was weird because i didn't really like it all that much while i was watching, but it's so significant that it's hard not to look back at it fondly.
