I would say this.

If he was a guy who you got along with pretty well, make up some stuff about how good of a worker he is, then if he does a shitty job and gets fired at his next job, then thats on him.

If you didnt get along with him, or if his laziness often affected you in a negative way, then write the letter for him, but make sure to mention all the reasons he is NOT a suitable candidate for the job.

Eh...that is a pretty good reason to fall asleep on his shift. How was his work when he was awake?

If he was a competent worker, but had a hard time staying awake through the night because he also worked all day, I'd say give him a break and be a reference. Maybe this job will pay enough that he can get by with one job and have an easier time staying awake.
