Poll of the Day > I just ran over my daughter's dog

And killed it. God, I feel so horrible. The dog was old but still peppy. He had a cancerous growth that the vet couldn't get all of and just kept growing. It caused him to stumble and threw him off balance. I thought he was running beside my car but I guess he stumbled in front of it.

I stopped and he got up, walked up the steps and laid on the porch. I ran up the steps to examine him and he started wagging his tail. I sat and stroked his head, he was bleeding through his nose. He looked at me, took a few ragged breaths and died. I couldn't have made it to the vet because that is 12 miles away.

My daughter is OK. She knew about his cancer and the vet suggesting to out him down at a later date but that doesn't change the fact I feel like shit for running over him.

He wagged his tail at me....poor thing...Omg... I am just sick about it.

Thats heartbreaking. But theres no way that you could have known he would stumble in front of the car. And at least you were there to comfort him at the end.

Damn. That sucks. It doesn't sound like there was much you could have done differently, but I know that's not going to make you feel much better.

We had no idea how old he was. We have a farm and people drop strays off all the time. He was grey around the muzzle when he showed up around 3 years ago and the cancer was already there. We took him in though. We loved on him and gave him a home when he was abandoned and skinny. He was a good farm dog. I just feel bad because he was always so happy to see me and Damn, I hit him with my car and he wagged his tail at me as he was dying.

Tbh, he was probably trying to cheer you up. Dogs are like that. They just want the people around them to be happy sometimes.

I think that is what is getting me. We knew that he was either going to die a horrible death from cancer or we were going to have to put him down within the next few months. We were already having serious discussions on it because it was coming but damn, we don't deserve this kind of love and forgiveness.

That's dogs for you if you show them love they show you love. The knows you didn't mean to do it, and was happy that you were with him at the end. It will be okay.

Nothing you can do about it but man this sucks. R.I.P.

I have put down many animals. We have a farm. I didn't have time to run get a gun. He died quickly and believe it or not mercy killing a pet or even a farm animal isn't fun. It doesn't get easier each time and personally I don't think it should.

If you are talking about his cancer then yeah, I guess I could have taken that responsibility upon myself instead of taking him to the vet to be put down but the vet said he was not in pain from his cancer at this point although it was affecting his gait and we were going to be there soon.

That sucks. Our last dog is on a short time table too. Has skin cancer, a growth on her leg, and torn tendons on the same leg. She's got pain pills at least, but as soon as she shows to be in distress or stops eating it's gonna be time to take her. She's still a torpedo when she sees or thinks she sees a cat in the backyard.

It's good that your daughter already had some time to process that her dog was dying, to lessen the shock of losing her pup. Still not easy, but at least it's not a lost pet out of nowhere.

While I'm sure it didn't mean for it to happen, the dog might've been... uh... pleased, for lack of better wording? Like... trying to think how to word this without it sounding horrible. It probably knew it was dying. The fact that it went out like that probably wasn't a huge bother, I guess?

This is so true though man, damn. I remember my dad running over my cat when I was younger too. I know he was getting older but wasnt Ill or anything, me and my sis were devastated.

Unfortunately, these things happen.
