Wrecked a whole pumpkin display in October over this. Courts ruled I was in the right up until I threw potatoes at the ceiling lights, which I can understand now after reflecting briefly on it.

They can ask, but you aren't obligated to show.

I show it. I don't have anything to hide and at least in the city I'm at there's multiple cases of attempted theft in stores every day, so I understand why they do it.

I'm not obligated, but it would save a lot of trouble, and it's not a huge inconvenience. If they're polite and dont appear to be singling you out for nothing, it's not really an issue.

That said, i'd bristle at it if i thought there was any racism or a false accusation brewing. I've been in those situations before. The best you can realistically hope for is that they make a big scene out of overconfidence so you can calmly and politely prove them wrong in front of the audience they try to build up.

It's so damn tempting to blow up in their face though.

A young greeter at my local Walmart asked me to do this recently, despite having like $20 of only food items in my cart, but apparently he was ignorant or illiterate despite looking like your average hip young city kid, because he asked me if it was the right receipt, which I said it was, because he then said there is a item in there that I didn't pay for and thought I was trying to steal a bag of popcorn that was in a bag in my cart, because he didn't see it on the receipt, but it was on there, so I had to take the time and point out for him. He was about to reach for his walky and call theft prevention before this, but noticed I was right, got quiet and then tried to apologize, but I was pissed and told him to keep the receipt, literally said "fuck you"and walked out.

He stayed quiet as he should of. He had no real reason to hassle me and my girlfriend like this as we stop by there usually twice a week to buy a few things don't do anything suspicious and have never shoplifted or done any other crimes and have clean records. Hopefully he learned to be more thorough before he jumps to conclusions and makes accusations.

Interesting to think that sueing someone who physically assualts you makes you "hard."

When food shopping the cashier often asks if I want a receipt or not. I usually say no. Guess I'm screwed if I get asked to show mine.

Btw, the door greeter and even AP/managers aren't allowed to touch people. If they can, they keep potential thieves distracted from leaving while they wait for police to show up and handle it.

I just show them because most of the time it's just poor old lady just doing this job to get by. I dont want to give them a hassle for doing their job. Most of the time they dont even read it, they just give it the old once over and say "you're good"

If it's store policy I think you would have to even if it's not against the law. It's kinda like how Disney in Florida makes you return your gun to your car if you go there despite it being perfectly legal to carry your gun. The police are at Disney as well to back up this policy and make them go to their car to put it back or take them up to the security office to secure it in a locker if they're a police officer or something.
