Automation is here and it's only getting bigger. Nearly every job you can think of will become automated at some point, and soon. Robots can simply do most human jobs better, with less errors, and more efficiently. This will result in a larger and larger amount of people who cannot get a job because they're strictly inferior to robots. UBI would fix this issue by giving everyone a regular income independently of the number of people who can work. How can you say no to that?

The same answer to when people panicked over the creation of assembly lines: new industries will open up that require low skill workers that support or augment autonomy in ways that it cannot handle.

They have giant 3D printers that can do that now. Just need a handful of people to put it together.

Automation is different. Robots can take over practically any low skill labor, including whatever might come out of automating all current low skill labor jobs.

It's not drying up the pool of jobs rather than raising the average skill requirements of jobs. Which is still a problem, just a different one.

Not really, no. How much do you actually know about autonomy and robotics?

Theres no real good answer that doesnt involve people being worth less than nothing and being treated as such

Problem with thinking the economic pyramid can just grow bigger, only with robots at the bottom and people in all the higher positions, is that the Earth and its resources are already being crushed under the foundation of what we have so making it bigger is just going to lead to a more spectacular collapse when it gives out from under us

So in this magical world where automation has taken over most low skill jobs and everyone has become educated and now has the skills to compete in this new world, the competition will still drive wages through the floor.
There will still only be some many jobs available. If everyone has the skills the do them that means that employers will be able to pay rock bottom wages and if you don't like it, well guess what, there are a few million other people out there with the same skills and a desire not to starve who will take your job.

i'd presume they would want government regulation limiting automation, more of the same kind of regulations they have always lobbied for that are pro-business and pro-capitalist at any cost, whether it be the environment, technological progress, personal liberty, etc. (and this from the party that is supposedly against big government intervention, no less)

is there anything more pro-business then a machine that can work all day and doesn't get paid?

That's nothing we need to worry about at present. If automation ever gets to the point of taking out most jobs, society will likely have progressed to a different kind of living. As of right now, every job that is replaced will open up several new ones.

I support UBI, but I can totally see society shifting more towards human/service-centric jobs that robots simply cannot do. Robots can automate, but we're all social creatures and most of us would rather turn to a human being instead of some machinery we can't relate to.

It's a funny joke that you think skilled tradesman will be replaced by robots any time soon.

Yes i've seen videos of it.

I've been a contractor my whole life. You need to be human to do most of the stuff in the building.

I'm talking about skilled trades here, not guys that dig holes.

But when everyone has to get those skills because those are the only jobs available makes the value of your skills plummet, which is exactly the point. Then the employers can pay you next to nothing and if you don't want to accept it they'll give the job to one of the billion people who have those skills and doesn't want to starve.
