Almost as much as my house mortgage. And likely more than what some of you pay for rent/your home. My lucky ass had to have twin boys.

And I thought my college tuition was bad. To put this in perspective...I could theoretically buy a summer home...or an entry level Ferrari/nice Porsche for the same monthly cost. I'm sick.

This was a last resort. We have no other alternative. Neither of us can stay home. I need to work to keep my family on our insurance plan. My wife needs to work because otherwise she'll go insane caring for them everyday. They're a nightmare most days. And she already reworked her schedule so she had Mondays off. My mom is already jeopardizing her job by "working from home" on Fridays.

And we both make good money, but yet half of it is being thrown away on this.

3 days is that much? What the heck? I think it's closer to 5 days is $1500 a month and I live just outside NYC. Where do you live.

NJ. AND we're getting a discount because the daycare is owned by a family friend. Normally it would be $2200 a month! #KillMe

Now keep in mind, my boys are only 6 months old. And the younger they are, the more expensive it is.

If they're only 6 months old should your wife not still be on mat leave? I don't know how it works in America, but in Canada you get a 12 month, or 18 month Mat leave option. (18 month is reduced pay obviously, but it works out to getting a little bit more). My wife is getting ~70% of her usual take home pay on the 18 month, though we got really lucky with ours, I believe it's usually 50% with a max of ~$1000 every 2 weeks.

you only get 3 months of paternity leave. Then there's something called FMLA but she would only be eligible for up to half her regular salary. And that only lasts 3 months as well. Count your blessings bro

Believe me I count them often. Very happy to be living in Canada even if the economy is very tough right now.

It took a lot of effort and 9 months of gradual shifts, but we've got our budget to a place now where we can survive on my income alone barely. And luckily my wife has a lot of good options on returning to work if she wants to. I'm pretty sure she will, she's gonna want a social life outside of baby sounds and high pitched encouragements.

There's a pretty big divide between the desire for children and the reality that is caring for them. Combined with the fact that this burden largely falls on women, I can understand why the wife is going insane after six months. Imagine you had to be wholly responsible for something that destroyed your body on its way out and that you have minimal social interaction with people your own age. No one talks about that, so people go in blind.

It kinda just happened. And we are both in our early 30s. So if not now then when? We love the boys. But let's be real. Having one is tough...but dealing with TWO crying babies day in and day out will drive even the most patient person insane. My wife is incredibly patient. But even she has started to crack because of the stress.

Has nothing to do with wanting kids or not. You don't know how they'll be til they're here. Right now they're teething too which makes it infinitely worse.

I should have added to my initial post. I don't understand why there isn't some form of insurance that helps subsidize the cost though. we have car insurance, health insurance, life insurance. You mean to tell me these dopey insurance companies haven't figured out a way to construct a childcare policy for parents? $20 bucks out of each paycheck gets me $500,000 if I die. Why can't I give that same $20 and only pay a co-pay each month for childcare? What parent or parent-to-be wouldn't enroll in something like this?

Thanks for clarifying, but I don't see how that could possibly work. How would anyone make any money off of that? The point of insurance is ideally you never use it or cost the company less than you're putting in.
What exactly would they be "insuring"? I see what you're saying but logically and mathematically I don't see how it could possibly work without gov subsidies and then we're right back to my initial point: why am I paying for someone else's poor planning?

Yeah I guess there in lies the problem...perhaps the deductions would be more than $20 per paycheck. Likely $150-$200. But the parent(s) would still pay less per month under this policy than on their own. I don't know, it would take a smarter man than me to make it all work.
