Glad they're dead, but I hate when developers still allow one save file per game.

I don't want to create another user when I have a 1TB hard drive. Fuck off.

I hated them. At least on Playstation it was justifiable because of the disc format but on N64 games using memory cards instead of battery backup on the carts themselves felt like a lame excuse to make you spend more money on pointless shit.

I was an OG Xbox guy so they're a long distant memory for me. Glad they're gone. Always had to delete shit on the PS1 memory card.

That, DK64, and campaign mode of Perfect Dark were the only ones that absolutely required it, but there were several others that could use improved graphics or allow more people in multiplayer if you had it.

Oh..

Memory Paks were for keeping a save if you sold the cartridge?

Right, or if the cart itself just didn't have storage for saves (I think THPS was like that).

Oh yeah, I also forgot how it was a hassle keeping track of which memory paks had which games' saves on them. And how Nintendo's memory paks had so frustratingly little storage space so then you'd buy the third-party ones so you didn't have to be switching memory paks out all the time but then they'd frequently fail and lose your data.

Mario Kart 64 saved ghosts on memory card, and Im pretty sure some third party games required it to save.

They only had the 8MB ones stocked most of the time too.

Glad they're dead. I can understand why PS1 and to some extent PS2 needed to do it; onboard storage would've cost a lot or been too limited, requiring either deleting saves or having memory cards as a secondary option. Xbox should never have done so; it should have accepted standard USB flash drives (which were starting to become common at the time, and this could've boosted them), just like PS3+ / XB360+ do (in fact, it DOES accept standard USB flash drives; the ports are literally just USB with a different plug - get an adapter and you can use a flash drive, though there is a maximum size).

Yes and no. The controller ports are, on an electronic level, just USB ports with a different physical plug. You can literally wire a controller cable together to a USB extension cable, bam, you can now plug a USB flash drive (correctly formatted, and with a very low size limit, I think 8MB?) into your Xbox. But it doesn't have any USB ports with the normal plug, no.

The 360 had USB ports.

Xbox came out in 2001. I don't remember how common USB's were back then and how expensive they would have been. You didn't need memory cards anyway unless you really wanted to share saves with friends.

By extension to what I said in my last post, the Xbox memory cards pretty much were just 8MB or so USB flash drives, except with a different physical plug.

Xbox 360 has USB ports but it required special memory cards to move data around at first. The USB storage devices weren't permitted until the S models did away with the memory slots.
