I told myself in 2017 that 2018 would be the best year of my life, and it is literally the complete opposite. I mean, as soon as it started, I felt a wave of depression, and now I'm ending it more miserable than I have ever been.

But that is me, I'm one man having a bad year, and 2018 means something different for everyone. What is 2018 to you?

Started off very sucky, but started turning around in early May. The last 6 months have been probably the best I've had in the last 8 years.

2018 has actually been a pretty damn good year for me so far. >_>

It was 2016 and 2017 that can go to hell tbh

Well, glad you had a good half-year. Hope it continues for the rest of your life.

2016 was pretty decent to me. 2017 started off fine but took a nosedive. Still, glad to hear 2018 has treated you better.

2018 could have been the worst year of my life in terms of mood & whatnot... but in terms of what actually happened it was a little better than 2017 & exponentially better than 2016.

You probably got a wave of depression because you set such an insane standard for the year. Expectations are directly connected to depression

You mind elaborating on that? Not saying you're wrong, I'm just curious as to any sort of study/etc. done on the matter. Looking back I did have high expectations for 2016-2017 myself and that set me up to think this year would be equally trash when it wasn't, but that's just anecdotal

I always try to go in with a smile as it gave me the best day of my life, Pi Day 2014. I told myself it was going to be a great day, and it was, nothing particularly special, but my mood was never better.

I guess the end of 2017 made me try to build hope that I could start being a real human with a real social life, I had a plan and everything, and instead I just sit and do nothing day in and day out.

I slowly crawled out of depression by lowering what I expected from life. So Im also speaking from an anecdotal experience. But Ive also noticed throughout my life that people around me that don't create this unlikely expectation that something is gonna be absolutely mindblowingly amazing, those people usually seem all around more content.

Saying 2019 is gonna be the greatest year of my life would be just asking for it to prove me wrong. I mean, there isn't even reasons stated of why it would be the best year ever. It was all expectation with what seems like no execution. That seems like the exact way to set yourself up for disappointment and depression.

TC, feel free to chime in here and let me know if Im wrong.

I mean, I live life with 0 expectations now and everything good seems like a nice surprise. The bad kind of just rolls off me cause I expected it >_>. Try to live a better life than that obviously but don't set yourself up to feel terrible just cause you want to pretend for a little while

I guess if I don't set myself up for expectations, I get depressed because then I feel like my life has no meaning to it. Also, instead of having a positive outlook, I pay more attention to bad things like I am with this year, and decide that fate just wants me to have the bad thing for real.

Honestly you sound about right

Hope for the best but never make new year's declarations/resolutions that you're going to make the year great

Like, ever. Honestly, completely eliminate new year's resolutions in general

Ah, that's it. I don't care if life is meaningless anymore. I can see how that's not an easy thing for most people to deal with. I kind of just got rid of all thoughts that can't be solved and just make it harder for me to live life contently. But that would mean nothing to me if someone told me it back when I was depressed. I have had bad health pretty much from birth and literally feel like the pain is gonna kill me at times. Yet somehow I just shrug it off now. I just think, it never killed me before so I doubt it will this time, and if it does at least it didn't get to control how I felt.

I don't expect anyone to believe the extent to which this is true tho. You gotta live it. I still freak out about other shit Im not as accustom to dealing with tho

Try not to make ambiguous goals like "best year"

Like it might be beneficial to think of something concrete to work towards next year, and smaller goals for every month/week/whatever that'll help you towards that larger goal

Idk.
