Sometimes I feel like I might be interested in them because they look pretty good in a cool, stylish way.
Then I remember they're suppose to be turn-based RPGs and that kind of put me off from them.

What are those games even about though and are they even connected?

Yeah, I'm not crazy about the weeb aspect of it, but if a game is fun or cool enough, I can look past that.
The story/characters in Nier Automata made me roll my eyes a bunch over how "anime" it got at times. But overall, I really like that game.

They're all standalone games though you might see cameos from characters from past games. They're about high school students fighting demons in other dimensions using personas. Personas are manifestations of a person's psyche or personality. So you do normal high school stuff during the day like answering questions in class or hanging out with your friends and at night you kick ass in another world in order to save ours. Its fun, the characters are likable, the stories are pretty cool and the music is great

The series is getting kinda stale now. 2 (both of em) was different to 3. 4 was a bit too happy and 5 is stylish... but lacks substance. IMO 3 was the best but a lot of folks didn't like not being able to control your allies so.

I'd say 4 is a good one.
3 has a more serious feel, but 4 is more enjoyable imo.
5 was just annoying after those two.
Not to say I didn't enjoy it some as well.

anime trope-ridden high school drama life sim interspersed with dungeon crawling turn based combat.

the games are incredibly slow paced and even though they expect experimentation, there are clear benefits to doing it "right" like building up your stats and relationships in the least amount of "tries" etc. which directly affect your options in the dungeon aspect of the game.

if that sounds up your alley then go for it.

right now i'm kinda fighting myself to get through P5 and i'm about 60~ hours in.

Its pretty much one of the best turn-based series so don't let that scare you; it may teach you to like them even. Theres a pokemon vibe to it too, but its much deeper.

It's one of the turn based systems that actually survives and does well imo tbh. Hitting weaknesses gives extra turns which adds a strategic element to it sometimes.

-strong philosophical and psychological themes (Jungian psychology, choice etc.)
-lots of great, fun, memorable characters

Persona is a series of very loosely connected urban fantasy time management simulators with elements of dating sims and catch-em-all type games included, with the main actual gameplay stuff being turn-based battle with, at least in P3 onward, heavy emphasis on learning and exploiting the weaknesses of enemies. Failure to do so, or having your weaknesses exploited, usually means you die quickly. The combination of collecting, raising and fusing "personas" and the fact that most random encounters around your level can actually pose a threat and thus require at least some thinking make it more engaging than most turn-based RPGs imo.

Premise is pretty universally that you're a high school student new to the school, and you have to balance your duties at school (going as far as in-game tests) and your time making/getting to know friends/possibly lovers with dealing with the main plot, which is always only something you and a small group of friends can handle through the powers of your "Persona".

3 is fantastic, 4 is great, haven't played 5 yet but am getting it for Christmas, and in the meantime plan on playing 2. Both of it. 1 is archaic as fuck and you're probably better off just watching an LP.
