Actress Gina Rodriguez is in hot water with social media users again after she made a declaration about equal pay among women actresses of varying races. During a roundtable talk with fellow TV actress Ellen Pompeo, Gabrielle Union and Emma Roberts, who are also movie stars, Rodriguez explained her fears with discussing the Hollywood pay gap. I get so petrified in this space talking about equal pay especially when you look at the intersectional aspect of it, right? Where white women get paid more than black women, black women get paid more than Asian women, Asian women get paid more than Latina women, and its like a very scary space to step into. Because I always feel like I fail when I speak about it because I cant help but feel already so gracious to do what I do and I feel like, culturally, I feel like I was raised to just feel so appreciative of getting here.

The remark left a bad taste in the mouths of many online, who wasted no time voicing their issues. Habitual Hater Gina Rodriguez says black actresses are paid more than Asians and latinas. She always coming with sideways comments about Black people. Fuck her. Keep our fucking name out your mouth, bitch. This the same ho that essentially said that Christopher Columbus was a hero.

Chile I saw the full video with Gabrielle Union, Ellen Pompeo, Emma Roberts and Gina Rodriguez. Ginas disdain for black people making it or should I said rising above her is palatable. She really blatantly lied about Black actresses making more than Latina actresses.

SOFIA VERGARA IS LITERALLY THE HIGHEST PAID TV ACTRESS! THIS HOE WANTS TO BE OPPRESSED SO BAD JESUS CHRIST.

She needs to realize she doesnt need to shit on black women to big up latinas. When it comes to Hollywood salaries, it's mostly just about success. Which is to say, I'm sure that most of the super rich actresses in Hollywood are white but because there's more super famous white actresses in Hollywood. Like, I don't imagine an Asian extra in a movie is going to make more then a Latina extra in the same movie just because of race bias. But Scarlet Johannesn is sure as shit going to make more then most minority actresses but not because she's white but because she's Scarlett Johansson ...

Isn't this the same actress that tried to argue with a guy while she was on a panel interview with a young black actress and the guy (speaking to the black actress) said she was a role model for young black girls?

I'm Mexican and Black from California, and there's always been contempt between the two. a lot of Mexicans blame Black people for their own lack of representation, and hold on to narratives created by White people about Black people. I can only speak for So Cal though.

both of my parents are biracial(both Black and Mexican) and have all sorts of bullshit experiences from insecure Mexican family members for made up reasons.

while her claim appears to be made up, the responses seem to also not actually address the data meaningfully: top-earning individual hispanic actresses are not representative of the systematic per-capita rate of acting pay by race, of any group

i'd be curious to see actual data of pay-by-race in hollywood. though even that is likely less representative of pay discrimination for equivalent roles, and rather of discrimination for quality of individual roles

honestly, wage discrimination is such a complex subject, it's kind of a shame to see anyone trying to break it down into a soundbyte--whether true or false. soundbytes are good for getting a bunch of people to nod their heads, but not great for actually creating positive change.

for example, the detailed examinations of the gender wage gap are what has helped us uncover that it's mostly a motherhood gap--and is helping create a drive for better maternity/paternity leave policies nationwide, especially at well-meaning employers who want to eliminate the gap among their own workers.

I'll never fully understand the logic behind the contempt towards Black Americans. there are both conscious and subconscious ways of displaying it, but people get reeeally mad when the conversation about how America has always profited/benefited from Black people struggles.

the Civil Rights movement is the closest Black Americans can get to some acknowledgement in America's history. it was a movement that sparked and inspired other movements of that time and effected the whole world as a result. most "people of color" alive today who lived through America's 1960's can remember darker times for their own people before that.

still.. the irrational contempt from other minorities continues.
