But yeah, while one sip probably won't hurt him, it's not a good idea to let him have access to beer. (Though it's also far from the most dangerous thing he could get at... avocado would be way worse.)

Oh, wow, that's pretty old. :O Though they can occasionally live to 35+!

Mine are roughly 4 (grey) and 2 (lutino).

Have you heard of Eric the Legend? He's known to go out of his way to try and get beer (though he's a corella, not a tiel).

No, it isn't. It's wrong to take wild birds and keep them as pets. But a bird raised from birth as a pet would have fuck-all chance of surviving in the wild, especially if they're handraised. And if they do survive, the impact on the local ecosystem could be even worse.

Andrew Jackson's bird had to be removed from his funeral because it was swearing too much.

I agree when they are caged all the time. This one has never been caged and has been abled to fly inside his whole life. Granted its not total freedom still he has a good life.

Are cockatiels good for first time bird owners? I was thinking about getting one of those, an Indian Ringneck or a caique.

I love cockatoos but they are just simply way too loud and need a lot of attention, so I just live vicariously through birds on YouTube like Eric the Legend and Gotcha. I know all birds are going to make noise but unfortunately I'll have to rule cockatoos out or my neighbors will hate me for it.

Very. Even a tiny amount can kill them.

Yes, they're pretty much second only to budgies in terms of being easy to look after - and they're MUCH friendlier. Indian ringnecks can be extremely noisy (mind you, male cockatiels can be pretty noisy too - although not to the same extent as ringnecks), and apparently also go through a "bluffing" stage where they can get really aggressive, which a lot of bird owners struggle with. I don't really know much about caiques.

With that being said, one of the biggest things new owners often overlook is just how many things can be dangerous to birds. Teflon (PFOA / PTFE / PFOS) cookware needs to go (ceramic non-stick, stainless steel or cast iron is fine). Pretty much all sprays and other things that give off fumes / strong scents need to be kept well away from them. Birds have very sensitive respiratory systems. They're fairly hardy when it comes to anything else, but that's a major weakness.

I mean my bird has survived a lot. Foot and nail injuries, flown into a window couple of times after being spooked, getting neck squashed between the door and wall when he was on top of the door (this was his worst injury, he lost some the memory of songs he could sing, and his lower beak someone got over his upper one, but that resolved itself), he has fallen into soup and more. Recently he got stuck on a fruit fly trap thingy, he lost couple of tail feathers from that.
