I've been watching Orange is the New Black for the first time and it made me think in the not too distant future as the retirement crisis starts to be realized that previous non-criminal elderly will start committing crimes to get locked up since it is better than homelessness as an older person if you get minimum security.

Think there is anything to this?

The aging prison population is definitely a stress on state budgets. It's a talking point I've been using for years to try to make our newer, better drug laws retroactive. It's really expensive to pay for prisoners anyway, but especially if they have health complications.

I've never heard of people trying to get incarcerated to not be homeless though lol

i don't think ex-convicts can draw from the system if there's a felony on a record.
can't even get food stamps.

Nah, not really. For one thing, SSI payments are suspended while you're incarcerated and terminated after 12 months of suspension, so you stop getting SSI if you've been incarcerated for a while.

The main thing is just that SSI isn't a health program lol. Lots of people are eligible for Medicaid through SSI, and you do lose Medicaid when your payments are terminated. So you stop having coverage after a year.

And even during that first year, federal funds aren't available on Medicaid to cover incarcerated individuals in most circumstances.

https://www.macpac.gov/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Medicaid-and-the-Criminal-Justice-System.pdf

Specifically, federal matching funds are available for individuals who are:
on parole, probation, or released to the community pending trial;
living in a halfway house where individuals can exercise personal freedom;
voluntarily living in a public institution; or
on home confinement.
Federal financial participation is not available for individuals living in:
state or federal prisons, local jails, or detention facilities;
federal residential reentry centers;
residential mental health and substance use disorder treatment facilities for incarcerated individuals;
or
hospitals or nursing facilities that exclusively serve incarcerated individuals (CMS 2016).

Huh, thats news to me. That seems counter intuitive to me in the long run, tax money-wise, since the older you get the more civil people in general become. Id imagine it'd be cheaper to give SSI than have someone feel the need to rob a place or commit a crime to get by

all the homeless are all on the street now. saw one this morning he was sleeping at an abandoned mechanic shop.
police make their rounds they wake them up and inform them of the laws regarding lodging.

there's a homeless shelter down the street >< and they don't bother using it.
