Which did turn out to be pretty lazy, although it was fun to see some of the randoms get back into the fray and sorta eliminate the ridiculous power scaling

The Dark Tournament in Yu Yu Hakusho is arguably the gold standard of anime, and the World Tournament in DBZ at the beginning of the Buu saga is great too.

YYH was like 90% tournaments. Even when it didn't need to be it still shoehorned everyone into 1on1 fights where everyone just stood around and watched tournament style battles happen.

Yeah, YYH was the show that essentially cemented the over reliance tournament trope nonsense. At least in DB they had the three tournaments as goals for up and coming martial artists, so there is a plot thread that makes sense there, albeit it fell off a cliff with Super.

YYH had a tournament almost every arc. Just got boring even when the fight scenes were great. Good choreography =/= a good story.

YYH is a great example actually because that really was the laziest plot setup ever. Watch it again and appreciate that all the characters are so fucking carried away by being stronger than then other guy that they really don't give a shit about anything important to them anymore. Just a bunch of guys stroking their own egos, desperate to win the tournament so they can say they did.

Yeah it was a fun watch but don't pretend it was writing mastery, the background plot really just served as a carrier.
