If you play a late one, it will make you stare at the screen with the swirling lights for like fifteen seconds.

And then if you go even further back and play a game from the cartridge era, you'll notice that it goes straight to the game without any noticeable loading times.

Technology has regressed in some ways. Remember no input lag? I still have never adapted to having input lag. Pisses me off to this day...even on TVs with minimal amounts.

Let me guess, you're one of those "Hurr graphics are the only change for new games" people

We have phones now that could hold entire game collections for some consoles. Technology didn't regress; the capabilities increased and so did the game sizes.

Nah, they tend to put in a lot of stupid changes in new games. Like replacing turn based games with action rpgs, making unlockable costumes paid dlc instead of unlockable costumes, and generally making shit worse instead of better.

There's also several gameplay mechanics that would've been impossible on weaker hardware. 100 player Battle Royale games, 64 player Battlefield matches, open world's not covered in fog to hide the shitty draw distance. If you accentuate the negatives it would be easy to make early PS2 games sound incredibly shitty too

For instance many of the menus in early PS2 games looked like PS1 menus

Fog created atmosphere in a lot of games like Silent Hill, and I consider everything going open world to be annoying since I just want a linear story driven narrative

A menu is a menu. Gimme a list of options and make it look nice, and it doesn't matter what gen it's for. FF9's blue menu is really pretty

It is kinda hilarious. RDR2 literally requires a separate install disc, this is something PC games in the 90s needed.

Yeah, we've got back to the point of "games have outgrown the current storage media". This isn't the first time it happened - Xbox 360 had this issue too with some games, due to sticking with DVD instead of upgrading to Blu-ray (IIRC, FF13 is three discs on XB360, while it's just one disc on PS3). Anyone who didn't think the same thing would happen again after "new generation, same storage media" was being a bit daft when designing the console. Hopefully they realise they need something larger than 50GB for PS5 / XB2.

It's a double edged sword. On one hand, loading screens and updates and installs suck. On the other hand, a broken game was going to remain broken forever.

I know what you mean, but not exactly. A lot of games were released in different versions because the first ones had some nasty bugs. It just wasn't marketed the same way.

Yeah, but it meant you had to buy the game again if the first release had any game breaking bugs.

Like I said, there is good and bad. A bad game with bugs was always going to be that way, but on the other hand, it also meant that you could jump right into playing out of the box. Good and bad, you know?

Can't wait for when consoles finally have to be rebooted with a different config to play a game and eventually you'll have to rewind a game to play it a second time. Meanwhile PC's are going to be like *click* enjoy game!

Psychonauts and Tony Hawk's American Wasteland on PC both had five discs, but that's because they perplexingly came on CD-ROMs at a time when DVD drives had been standard in PCs for a long time.

And maybe this is cheating, but The Sims 1 with all the expansions were 11 CD-ROMs total. So if you wanted to install the complete version of Sims 1, it could take you well over an hour. Especially since you have to initiate the install EIGHT times, since there were seven expansion packs.

The Sims 1 isn't on any digital distribution network yet either, not even on Origin, so that's pretty much how you still have to play it.

Let's be real though

Hard disk storage is cheaper than its ever been and most single player games are a one and done deal no matter how large the file when it installs.

Sure it sucks that the space sizes are getting larger but unless you want your game looking like some 2D indie affair, 4K textures and audio are not small files.
