So I kinda put myself out of the frying pan and into the fire here. I read that by uninstalling all your USB stuff in Device Manager, then on reboot Bluetooth would re-launch successfully and I'd have it again. This worked. However Windows apparently doesn't want to get around to letting me use those ports again. How do I fix this?

I'd try to rule out a hardware issue first. Boot to a Live CD/USB and see if it works there. If it doesn't, it's probably a hardware failure. If it does, then Windows is just being Windows.

I don't see how it can be a hardware failure when it is a direct result of me having uninstalled the drives. They show up again in device manager now, but whenever I plug something in it takes some moments, without the 'plug in' jingle, and then windows says that the device malfunctioned, if it says anything at all.

But you were having bluetooth issues before you did that, right? IME that's one of the first things to go when the chipset is fucked.

Reinstall the drivers. That's what you uninstalled.

Edit: If the ones that auto install by windows don't work then you need the manufacturer's drivers.

This fixed it when it happened to me. Of course I also did this with my Wifi when it started fucking up but then it refused to reinstall the drivers at all and had to reset the laptop >_>. Fucking Windows 10

Have you disabled your anti-virus/protection software? Something those will have settings that prevent USB devices from initiating.

It's actually really easy.

1. Download an Ubuntu ISO from the Ubuntu website.
2. Download Rufus (freeware USB formatting tool).
3. Click the disc image on the bottom-right, select the Ubuntu ISO you downloaded and use these settings:

1FOqkAF

4. Click "Start" and wait.

Speaking of which can you still play games on Linux? I only use this laptop for videogames and HDMI'ing anime onto my TV.

I hope this works as it would mean it's not a physical drive problem I guess but even still I see no way to fix it on the Windows side short of doing a full factory default wipe perhaps, and I don't have an external hard drive to back up my files.

Just reset it and take the USB drive out. Nothing is permanently installed unless you went through the install process. Just booting the live USB doesn't change anything on the hard drive.

Also, if you're on Windows 10 you don't need to back up your files to an external drive. Just go to Settings and click the Reset thing. It will give you the option to keep your files.

Speaking of which is it better to upgrade to Windows 10 at this point? I never did because I heard about annoying forced updates and perhaps spyware. Or Windows messing with 'unofficial' games on your hard drive, which I may have >_>

Forced updates is true, the rest is not, as far as I'm aware.

The entire OS at this point is spyware, but i dont think it messes with your files, outside of windows defender which behaves as an antivirus should

There's no specific option for usb drivers

What OS are you using? Win7 or 8 cause there are USB 3.0 drivers listed under the Win7 drop down.

I'd like to thank everyone that tried to help

I did a system refresh, and the USB drives work again. The consequences are a bit severe, the devil put internet explorer back into my task bar and several icons like Firefox are nowhere to be seen. But just being able to use my mouse again is really great.

Anything tied to the old install (pre-system refresh) is usually put under "C:\Windows.old", so if any files are missing just check that folder.
