The area is still trying to recover full power after the ice storm on Thursday and she's mad that she has no internet. She said she is going to file an insurance claim for the time out with her insurance company.

How does that even work? How likely is her insurance company to laugh at her?

Isn't that your job?

Or am I mistaken you with someone else

I thought your job was dealing with call-ins about claims

100% likely. Tell her to call in and ask for compensation when the issue is fixed

I'm internet and phone helpdesk. I'm not her insurance agent.

Outage caused by weather/power issues. We probably won't be crediting anyone since it wasn't our fault. lol

So many commercial accounts calling in being like 'this is costing us $5K a day'.

That's why you have redundant systems. If I owned a company that required internet for point of sale devices I'd for sure have a cheap DSL or alternative internet service as a fallback. No system has 100% uptime and paying $30-60 a month for a backup is way better than losing $5K in sales a day.

I used to work in property insurance. Under an open peril policy there is likely not coverage under Coverage D.

The big issue is the deductible.

This is ridiculous.

If, for example, you pay $60 a month for your internet (= $2 per day, using round figures because your face), and it's down for 3 days (and assuming the downtime isn't the customers fault), I think it's fully reasonable to expect to be refunded / credited the $6 for that downtime, since they failed to provide that service to you for that time. But unless they've specifically promised you "we won't have any downtime, you can rely on us 24/7", it's up to you to have a backup plan in place for running your systems, and they don't owe you shit beyond removing the downtime days from your bill.

What would she even be able to get out of it? I just don't understand how there is insurance to cover something like.

It wouldnt under any policy I have seen. But Part D covers loss of use, so you cant live in your house you get a rental paid for plus increase in food costs, etc.

Its possible some company interprets this broadly enough to cover lost internet you paid for.

But again, if your deductible is even as low as $500 this would be well below that.

Extremely unlikely but if she's complaining about a business internet she can file for Business Interruption Insurance if she was paying for it but most likely she's just a moron.

Nah. Unless they're paying for an SLA then they pretty much got no grounds to complain on.

Depends if they have competition or not. Some places your options are Comcast or slow as fuck satellite.
