A two-year-old boy is dead after finding a handgun under a pillow at his home and accidentally shooting himself, according to police in Jonesboro, Georgia.

Police responded Thursday to reports of a child shot and found a toddler with a gunshot wound to the body, said Capt. Scott Stubbs, a spokesman for the Clayton County Police Department.

The boy, who was not identified, entered a room where his father was sleeping and found a handgun under a pillow. The boy died after being rushed to a hospital, Stubbs said.

Police are still in a fact-finding investigation, and the boys family is cooperating, Stubbs said Thursday.

He said the case will be reviewed with the district attorneys office, which will decide whether any charges are filed.

What a tragic and senseless loss of such a young life.

in cases of negligence like this the owner of the gun should never be able to own a gun again. Under a pillow, loaded and ready, unsupervised is not where a gun should ever be.

"Father's pillow"
"his father was sleeping"

This implies the father somehow didn't notice his child rooting around under the pillow upon which his head was resting. Curious to know what the explanation there is.

I don't mind people having guns but if you are fearing for your life to the point where you think people are coming after you that you need to have a loaded gun available at a whim, maybe you shouldn't be having kids and putting their lives in danger because of your ghetto ass.

He moved in his sleep and wasn't on the pillow? Mattress was one of those designed to not transfer motion through so he didn't feel it?

Where was the kids mother in this whole ordeal?

More than that, they should also face criminal charges in cases of extreme negligence like this. The gun was left within easy reach of a child, loaded, and without any sort of safety mechanism engaged.

Look I am not onboard with the whole Lock it up in your safe, in a gunbox in the attic, unloaded, and the ammo in a separate lockup kinda thing because how the fuck will you get to it, and ready to go in a actual emergency?

But yeah loaded under the pillow is top tier stupid kid or not.
