I won't take a single gaff from live television and then generalize about an entire organization, regardless of which organization. No one is perfect on the air, especially not under pressure and under highly politicized events. What she said was stupid and incorrect but to generalize about the NRA as a whole which exists to preserve 2nd amendment rights is as stupid.

They had nearly a week to prepare something and didn't, and given their track record it's easy to argue that was intentional. They deserve zero benefit of the doubt here.

No, it doesn't hurt the "good guys with guns" narrative. Disasters and tragedies don't change the good. IF the cops didn't fuck up this would've definitely been a "good guy with a gun" saving the day. Highly politicized events cause people to stay stupid shit when they're playing damage control. I'm not going to throw the baby out with the bathwater. As long as politicians are trying to upend the 2nd amendment, we need groups like the NRA to preserve our rights.

Plus this was on their own network/channel. Its not like CNN or whoever asked her to come on and put her on the spot. That was their own network, their own segment, their own editing. They chose to air that themselves. It says NRATV right in the corner.

I don't think you have to be anti-2nd amendment to acknowledge that the NRA has become beholden to conservative paranoia to the detriment of their stated cause. America's gun owners, and the people who genuinely believe that guns are a necessity to defend against tyranny, would be better served by an organization that doesn't constantly contort itself to excuse the police in cases such as this.

That is the political climate, though. Everything has become partisan hackery and exaggeration because that is what generates clicks on videos and news articles.

This incident can hurt their narrative in a few ways. In this case a good guy with a gun stopped a would be mass murderer without escalating or making the situation worse. He focused on the shooter, didnt fire when he didnt feel he needed to and apprehended the man so he wouldnt be able to use his gun to hurt anyone. The NRA should LOVE that...but the man in question still died at the hands of the cops.

That could do two things. Make those who disagree with their GGWAG theory have more ammo against them (like you said) or make those on the fence about it think well there is still a chance I could die? Why take the risk of being a good guy then

Youre right in saying they should have called for better cop training but that would go against everything the vast majority of NRA supporters have been fighting against. The cops are trained to do that they had to do that the system isnt broken...they cant go against their own base like that so what do they instead do?...blame the hero. He was a good guy but he wasnt a good guy the Right Way. We need more guys like him but they should do it the right way. Then you wont have to worry about the police simply doing their job.

That statement, on their own Network, on their own show, by their own spokesperson, is 100% damage control and a poor attempt to protect their own narratives and interests. It wasnt a gaff. She didnt misspeak. She put thought into what she said and formulated a full on theory as to why he was killed.
