If your not already, switch your controls and play on builder pro, it helps a ton. When I first started I thought it was stupid, I didnt even want to build a ramp or wall cause my thinking was nah Ill just shoot the guy. But now that Ive got better its so fun and addicting! Im not saying Im great or anything, but I can hold my own so its a lot more fun now. But I think the main thing is I have a big group of friends irl and on psn that play it a ton too, so Id say main thing is get a squad of friends to play with.
