People were starting to turn on that sort of ideology at that point, or at least, celebrities were usually a little more quiet about it. It's like when I read Howard. His stories have some blatantly racist caricatures and stereotypes. At least with Howard, though, he makes it clear that everyone is brutal and amoral and the heroes aren't really any better than the villains, not to mention the fact that he actually included some positive minority characters. It's particularly disappointing given many of his contemporaries actually got better on the subject over time(such as Robert E. Howard, best known for various Conan the Barbarian stories).
