It sucks. The man had some cool ideas, but it sucks that he was such a wingnut. He's also from the time period where opinion on that was starting to turn a bit, making him look even worse.

My problem about knowing the artist is that I always wonder how much of their views bled into their work.

I almost understand the people who think it was just an act to give his "fear of the unknown" theme more depth. The reality is just too ironic.

Yeah apparently many believe some of the creatures and monsters in some of his books were allegories for the races he disliked which weren't just limited to black people. It makes sense considering his comments on black people being "beasts who weren't quite human" which describes a few of his creatures >_>

Yeah, he was active in like, what, 1920s? People were starting to turn on that sort of ideology at that point, or at least, celebrities were usually a little more quiet about it.

It's like when I read Howard. His stories have some blatantly racist caricatures and stereotypes. At least with Howard, though, he makes it clear that everyone is brutal and amoral and the heroes aren't really any better than the villains, not to mention the fact that he actually included some positive minority characters.

Wait, they were friends, weren't they?

Yeah, Lovecraft is really disappointing, because he was extremely and unrepentedly racist until the end, and it definitely poisons his work. It's particularly disappointing given many of his contemporaries actually got better on the subject over time(such as Robert E. Howard, best known for various Conan the Barbarian stories). And Tolkien made the dwarves Semitic because he thought Hebrew was cool and was really grossed out by racists reading his work as endorsing racism(and there's some evidence he was working on some stories to make that harder).

In general, it also seems like the ones worshiping the Old Ones are mostly mysterious, foreign black people.

I hate when people sarcastic gripe like this. Maybe there is a solution between erasing him and revering him? Maybe we can look at his work and his life and teach why he was wrong and study his literature for what it was without either destroying it or putting it on a pedestal as an ideal.

You don't have to wonder at all with Lovecraft. Many of his stories feature obvious racist caricatures. Call of Cthulhu being a prime example.

1. i said i don't remember, not that i didn't

2. i don't care enough about this to do so. you made your usual "dismissive of people caring about racism" post, Dash_Harber called you out, i explained why he shouldn't bother. that's as far as my involvement here goes, friend.

Thats what I thought. I have no more desire to speak to you on this matter. I recommend utilizing your ignore feature in the future.

Of course.

Like another poster said, though, don't let his racism kill your curiosity. He was a gross person but he's also one of the most important people in horror even nowadays. His writing style (racism aside) is normally too off-putting for me but that may not be the case for you.
