I kinda wonder how Calculus is approached now.

Back when I was in high school (I'm 34 now), Calculus was a specialized course. You only took it as a prep course for University. The rest of our Mathematics was broken up into 3 basic realms, and you only needed 1 to get your degree.

Pre-Calc Math - Seen as the most advanced if you weren't doing Calculus itself. General mathematics classes designed to bridge you to Calculus if you saw fit. University accepted.

Applied Math - More focused on using programs to do mathematics and understanding that as opposed to going into Calculus. University accepted for most programs, especially for programming.

Consumer Math - The math focused for more "remedial" students, it was actually the most life useful. It focused on mortgages, loans, setting budgets, etc. etc. Not university accepted however.

It was an AP class for me, and I graduated hs 2008

College was split into 3 stages (per semester):
Derivatives
Integrals
Multi-variable

I just checked my school and looks like they still do that, except they're imposing workshop classes to go with them now. Pretty messed up considering the time and maybe money imposed, when realistically it boils down to the core classes needing to be taught better imo.

AP class. I took it in 11th grade, then took calc 2 senior year. I tested out of both and jumped into higher math in college.

Nah man

Math kids took it. I was a history/lit kid. Only two people took US AP history in my class. I was one of them

No, but I think precacalculus and calculus 1 were available to high school students from the university extension next to our high school. We ended up doing a semester of physics instead of calculus though.

We didn't have AP classes at our high school but could take university classes for both high school and college credit.

It was an AP class

I think to graduate high school you only needed to get through algebra and maybe geometry. Trig, advanced math (basically an algebra 2 class) and calculus were all recommended for people planning to go to college but calculus was the only AP math class.

graduated more than 10 years ago myself.

for senior year, you had two choices for math, if you wanted to keep taking it: AP Calculus or AP Statistics

I did IB alg 2/trig, IB geometry, IB precal, IB cal.

I think regular classes ended at like algebra 2 or something. So yeah it was college prep only

Pre-Calculus/Trig was the "advanced" math class for seniors at my school. The other seniors took Algebra 2. This was about a decade ago.

I was a Biology major in college and finished all my math classes (which meant just retaking Pre-Cal and Trig) my freshman year, so I have no idea how it was broken down there.

He's talking about college/university there. Read the previous sentence.

I did read the previous sentence. it's unclear. does "get your degree" mean "be accepted to a university"? if so, why didn't he just say that?

It was a class but I never did well in math so I never got close to that nightmare. That was in the 90s.
I got as far as Algebra 1. Math was only required for 3 years in hs. I had pre algebra, geometry and algebra 1. Passed with Ds in all three of them.

If you were 1 grade ahead in math you took calc AB
If you were 2 grades ahead in math you took calc BC

Math was only required for 3 of my high school years.

Edit: We did offer "A-level" pre-calc. But most people who took a 4th year of math were already a grade or two above, and took AP.
